Reached out to others as well for backup role

quote:

There was a caveat. Brees, like Rivers, was not interested in returning as a backup, which makes sense given his long, storied career. If he was going to come out of retirement and make a triumphant return, it would have to be as the starter. And Brees would have been the only player who could have pulled it off because of his experience and intimate knowledge of the offense.

We weren’t willing to promise him the starter role over Taysom, Book, and Simian?

I’d take Rivers over Brees.

Man can you imagine brees coming out the tunnel Monday night for one more ride.

Brees would wait till the Saints are 10-7-0 and playing Brady in the first round of the playoffs.

Would be glorious.

If true, this would be a hoot.

No, nowhere in the article did it insinuate he was asked to come back as a backup. The OP just said they reached out to others as backups

Shame it didnt work out. Brees claims his arm can't make the necessary throws, but 5 yard dinks would be a massive improvement over what we have now.

Props to Brees on the arm strength admission but man it would have been a great scene and an appropriate setting for a last ride

Last rides usually turn out to be inglorious. Think Jordan, Ali, Holmes, Farve ect. It generally ends badly and there is zero reason to believe Drew has something in the tank that he didn't have while still playing in his last regular season.

To be fair, I’d GLADLY take whatever was in Drew’s tank his last season:

In 12 games:
24 TD
6 ints
3,000 yds
71% comp
106.4 rtg

Over 16 translates to 32 TD, 8 ints, 4,000 yds. Not bad.

Brees was big time beat to hell last season. Shoulder, ribs, etc.
Healthy Brees can get through a handful of games.

Remember Peyton manning in his last season with Denver? He was a shell of his former self but that guy won a Super Bowl.

Doubt it. Bortles is 29 though, so I doubt he has to really build up arm strength yet

Yep, and in his last season he completed 60% of his passes with 9 TD 17 ints. Brees’ final season slaughtered Manning’s.
