Penning played RT much better than expected and much better than the Saints fans give him credit for last year. I think he could excel at G because he was always better at run blocking than pass blocking. My only issue with the line this year (if Penning at LG) is RG (Ruiz needs to go).

it’s another admission we busted on two picks with Penning

Why do people keep harping on this? He has been a bust. For where he was picked and what we gave up to get him, being just average would mean he's a slight bust. Doesn't mean he doesn't have value. But it's a sunk cost. This team can't let admitting a mistake influence any decisions for putting together the best possible O Line this year.

ETA: also I am optimistic about Trevor at G. I think he can be decent there.

I’ve been saying he should have been moved to guard after his rookie year.

His skill set seems better utilized at guard, guess it took coaches a couple years to see it. He played ok at RT last year though, better than I thought. And probably would improve with more experience at the position.

Even if he develops, which I doubt at 6’7” as most DTs will be too quick to get under Penning as he plays far too high I wouldn’t give him a big contract (we didn’t pick up the option). It was a bad pick then, this doesn’t change any of that.

What a miserable take lol

Sounds like "Project Penning" may be getting his last shot @ a starting NFL gig

Penning will be excellent at guard and it will further exemplify how much of a moron Dennis Allen was Fuaga at RT is his natural position as well

If Banks is so good/bookend at left tackle that we’re willling move Fuaga back to RT then fricking shite, damn, pretty badass for the Saints. Fuaga looked like a future bookend LT last year. Banks forcing Fuaga back to the right side is a win for the saints.

He’s a cheaper resign at guard. Maybe not.

Thats a good point.

I know he is tall but Penning is a big, angry redneck. G seems like the perfect place for him. Forget all that footwork just blast the guy in front of you. He can do that.

if he goes out there and kicks arse dream on Bro!

Guard play is way important than people think.

I Agree that this is the right move, and he'll probably do better but if he has a similar Mekhi Becton type success at guard? I don't know.

Becton just signed a 2 year-20 million dollar deal.

IF Penning does go out there and kick arse then Great! But one thing about it, Loomis might overpay to keep him.

it may be a shorter deal like 2 or 3 years like teams seem to be doing these days, but the Saints are a team who don't like to give up so easy on high draft picks.

This needs to be permanent. The experiment with him at tackle failed. Give the latest first round draft choice his chance.

Before last season, Mekhi Becton was seen as a bust with the Jets at tackle. The Eagles signed him cheap, moved him to guard, and he was a key player for the best o line in the league.
I bet Kellen is trying to do the same thing with Penning. Idk if it will work but I get the rationale.

Perfect. Penning will be one of the most athletic guards in the league

He's great at run blocking. Looks like Moore is ready to install the black and gold tush push

He had no business getting that contract his specifically collapsed the saints. Any else would have been got rid of mr 30 pff rating

You keep saying this, but wasn't he a 4th round pick? Even as a guard, hard to label any 4th round pick a "bust"
