Comp-pick analysis: The signing of Tyrann Mathieu earlier this week happened after the deadline for it to count against the compensatory pick formula, which was a smart move by the Saints. However, signing Dalton in March, instead of after the draft, could cost the team a third- or fourth-round compensatory pick, since he and Maye together would zero out the Saints' losses. There is a chance Dalton might not qualify for the formula, based on his salary and lack of expected playing time as a backup quarterback. According to one former cap specialist who worked in the NFL for a long time, though, the Saints could still be in line for a late seventh-round pick even if Dalton counts against them, thanks to a point system built inside the comp-pick formula.

the saints presumably knew the risk they were taking when they signed dalton. losing a late 3rd for a guy you hope doesn’t play is pretty questionable

Losing a 3rd for signing freaking Dalton is inexcusable. If it happens. You can’t lost two top tier free agents at their position in their prime and not come away with at least one third.

Seems that way, but signing mathieu and potentially Landry signals they're trying to win. Couldn't let the season depend on book

The way that reads is you would only lose the 3rd if Dalton does play significant time.

Maybe someone else can clarify.

Were you watching last year? How many QBs started for us again? A backup QB with a ton of starter experience is more valuable to me than a 3rd round pick.

Nah if you listen to this board we hit on like three 3rd round picks in the last thirty years so it's obvious we have a high probability of doing it again

Aren’t the contracts and level of player taken into account for comp picks? The whole point is to keep teams competitive, losing 2 top 5 free agents shouldn’t net 0 picks because we got a good safety and below average QB… contracts were what, $150M+ vs $35M?

The formula makes no sense when you consider we lost.

Marcus Williams
Terron armstead
Trevor siemian

And we gained
Marcus maye
Andy Dalton
Random dlinemen

Thats at least a net 3rd still

Why wouldn't Kwon factor into it also?

I think they panicked after what happened last year when Jameis went down. Can't piss away a playoff-caliber team by not having a serviceable QB. If we lose a 3rd because of that it's a really fcking dumb move.

The Saints didn't panic. They are very shrewd with comp pick strategy and have a much more firm grasp on how this operates.

Armstead, Williams, Backup Trevor (who had starts)

Maye and Backup Dalton (who may or may not have starts)

Saints are very well positioned for high comp pick. The Trevor signing in free agency is key to the scale.

Agree. IF we lose a potential 3rd rounder for a guy that you clearly could have waited until after the draft to sign, it reeks of incompetence in evaluation of the compensatory picks.

Not only that, you have to argue the worth of Dalton over Blake Bortles. Not just Dalton over nobody.

I wouldn't say shrewd given their track record as one of, if not the, team with the least comp picks in the last 10-15 years.
