paying the corner a long-term, big-money contract.

I've been wondering how signing Butler would affect Breaux's free agency next offseason. If we can't establish a decent pass rush this season, is it worth paying $20+ mil/year for 2 CBs? I would think re-signing Breaux would be a pretty high priority.

unless Breaux is a monster this year, he's not going to get a huge deal.

he's older, with a pretty extensive injury history and he hasn't been nearly as good as most Saints fans imagine he has been.

TheMMQB's Peter King reported Monday that the Saints are leaning towards keeping their first three picks (11, 32, 42), per a source familiar with the team's thinking.

its very true, that an average talent player always look better, when the guys around him are worse.

now im not saying breaux isn't good, I think he is good, but im not so sure he isn't made to look better then he really is by the guys around him being very bad.

I remember hearing jim mora saying on an interview how when the defense played the offense in practice, both sides looked really good, so he couldn't understand why they couldn't do that good when playing against other teams lol

How does Butler have ANY leverage at this point?

not really leverage but the reality is, he's not happy, will be a bit disgruntled playing out season and is walking next year, pats will get nothing other than "potential" compensation pick a year down the road.

Better than spending 12 million for a potential bust and needing to eat his cap hit for many years. It's exactly the reason Saints were in cap trouble for years is because they made bad moves like this. Got to get strong through the draft or you'll never compete. Sure, you have the other side to that where he could turn out to be worth it but a draft pick is low risk since you're not paying him anything. At least with a draft pick you can pay him dirt cheap for years and know if he's worth a 50 million contract in your system. I'm at the belief you can't win a SB with a bunch of high paid FAs unless you have amazing depth through the draft which the Saints do not. They have way too many holes to be relying on 12 million a year players. Even in positions we're solid at we still need depth. Injuries are inevitable. We suck at drafting and need to get better.

Maybe now that the Saints and Butler have gone through the trouble of a negotiation, the Pats think they can squeeze more out of them.

Bill Belichick would need the right offer to come his way if he's to give up a Pro Bowl-caliber corner playing for dirt cheap.

Unlike what Loomis and Peyton did for Cooks.

He did play very well for the most part that first year.

But you are right in that he is older with an injury history.

It's going to take some kind of year for him to cash in in 2019 (iirc he'll be a rfa next year).

he did play well his rookie season, but that's not to say he was uniformly good. he embarrassed himself against Arizona, TY Hilton torched him, etc. he settled down and was pretty great but as of now he's a guy with a rough injury history who played REALLY well for a stretch of games.

My prediction is the deal goes down late Friday night with NE receiving a 2018 2nd Rd pick that can become a 1st if Butler reaches certain (easily reached) milestones.

While I like the deal for Butler I figured the price would start going through the roof. The Saints have been burned lately in these deals. Rather the draft

I still want Butler but the more prudent move is waiting until draft night and a more clear picture of what's available at #32 and 42
