It's easy to be accurate when you have Lincoln Riley calling your plays against Big 12 defenses

I didn't like what I saw at all in the 2nd half of the Rose Bowl vs an SEC defense

I never had an issue with his character but I think his "accuracy" is no better than Colt McCoy's coming out of college

I don't think he'll be a bust but, I sure as hell don't want the Saints to trade up into the top 10 to get him

It'll be fricking stupid

Roquan Smith Breakdown

Here's a good scouting video

So a guy that can only be good if he fits a certain scheme and has an elite defensive line. Definitely someone we should trade up for.

This is my opinion as well. If one of our targets falls to 20 (like Mayfield, Roquan, or Davenport)...I could accept us trading up.

Trading into the top 10 will basically take all of our top picks away for 2018 & 2019. We already don't have a 2nd in 2018 & we can kiss our 2019 picks goodbye if we go this route.

Personally, I'd like to trade back from 27 into the early 2nd round (picking up a 3rd rounder in the process). I'd also trade some of our late round picks (2 5th, 2 6th, 7th) & even a 2019 pick to acquire a pick in the top 4 rounds.

Basically, I'd like to acquire as many picks as possible in the top 4 rounds for 2018. With our current roster depth...I really don't see the point in keeping all 5 picks from rounds 5-7. I also don't see the point in giving away all our top picks for the next 2 years to draft a single player.

Imagine how much better we could improve our roster with depth for this year & potential starters for the future...
Early 2nd round pick
3 picks in the 3rd round
4th round pick

That is my dream scenario. We could also take a RB & Safety with our remaining picks that we don't trade away in the 5th-7th rounds. RB & Safety are probably the 2 easiest positions to hit on late in the draft (obviously not counting FB, K, & P). This just seems like the smart thing to me.

Mayfield and Bourbon Street mix like Kerry Collins and Bourbon Street did. Not good.

Obviously, the chances of my above post happening exactly that way are almost 0%. I'm just giving a general outline on what I think the best way to acquire talent is. Taking a deeper look into it...

I'm going to assume that we acquire the following players...WR Cameron Meredith, WR Willie Snead, & OT Austin Howard. These just seem like the best bets as of right now.

QB(3) - Brees, Savage, Hill
RB(4) - Ingram, Kamara, #3, Lasco/Williams/Edmunds
FB(1) - Line
WR(5) - Thomas, Ginn, Meredith, Snead, Lewis/Carr
TE(3) - Watson, Fleener, Hill/Hooman
OL(9) - Armstead, Unger, Warford, Peat, Ramcyzk, Austin Howard, Bushrod, Tom (I think he's a question mark though), #9
K(1) - Lutz
P(1) - Morstead
LS(1) - Zach Wood
DT(4) - Rankins, Davison, Onyemata, #4/Loewen
DE(5) - Jordan, Okafor, Hendrickson, #4, Kikaha/Muhammad/George Johnson
LB(6) - Davis, Klein, Anzalone, Robertson, Te'o, #6/Stupar/Mauti
CB(6) - Lattimore, Crawley, PRob, PJ Williams, #5/Maulet, Hardee
S(5) - M. Williams, Bell, Coleman, #4, Banjo

If we had the following picks that I mentioned in the above post...we would be able to completely stack our roster & get younger.

Early 2nd round pick
3 3rd round picks
4th round pick
5th round pick
6th round pick

#3 RB, 1 or 2 OL, & BPA on defense. WR wouldn't be a need at all in this scenario (drafting a WR would be overloading the position imo). I'm assuming we don't draft a TE this year with those 4 guys currently on the roster (probably draft a TE in 2019, & also sign a TE in F.A. for 2019).

The point is to load up our roster so much, that when we finally have to trade away draft picks to acquire our QB...we can draft whatever QB we want (even if he's in the top 5...like the Eagles did with Wentz) & also be able to overcome losing our top draft picks. I don't think we're currently in that position.

Maybe if he's falling past 10. The cost of trading up is so high now. It's really retarded to do it for a LB.

I dont know about Smith. But the way Devin White takes over games, it'd be worth it to trade up for him next year.

No way not with the RBs we already have.

I also kind of feel this way too. We could always grab a free agent QB next offseason or after that.
We have to do what we can to win the next 2 years.
The post-Brees era will suck no matter what so just spend draft picks on key players now.

Let me tell you those defenses in the Missouri Valley Conference really were tough & helped Carson Wentz become a MVP caliber QB only in his second year.

PFF on Mayfield

Lincoln Riley Breaks Down Film of Mayfield

Baker Mayfield perfectly draws up new play from memory at combine with Steve Mariucci

Baker Mayfield was impressive drawing up plays on the white board in front of the cameras at the NFL combine.

The Oklahoma quarterback probably did plenty of work on the board during interviews with teams, but fans also got a peek at how well he’s grasping NFL offenses during an interview with NFL Network’s Steve Mariucci. And it looks like he’s doing pretty well.

Mariucci brought Mayfield into the interview room and showed the quarterback a play from the West Coast offense that he used to run as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He then sat Mayfield down and kept asking the quarterback questions. Then he told Mayfield to get up and draw the play from memory.

The Heisman winner did it nearly perfectly, from the play name, to the route options, to the blocking assignments. He even remembered most of the names of the players Mariucci used to run the play with in San Francisco.

Mayfield told Mariucci that he’s been learning West Coast passing concepts during his preparations for the draft. He said he has learned about that playbook from meeting with the New Orleans Saints, one of the teams that met with him extensively at the Senior Bowl. That probably helped him in this exercise with Mariucci.

Oklahoma’s scheme is heavily influenced by the Air Raid, so Mayfield’s ability to learn an NFL playbook is one of the biggest questions about his professional potential. It looks like he’s already making progress in that regard, and he’s also reminding all of us how much more complicated NFL plays are than they look in Madden.

Don’t want an undersized LB that excelled with elite talent around him.

Seems like he would be a candidate if he fell to #27 though.

Everyone keeps saying trade back, get more picks. I do not get this.

Do you think these 3rd/4th/5th round guys are going to turn into 1st team all-pros? Because that rarely happens.

My reasoning is that I think the 27th pick & an early 2nd rounder are actually very close in regards to talent this year (unless a top 15 guy falls, obviously).

I'm not expecting All-Pros, but 3rd & 4th round picks are very valuable if you can identify talent (like Ireland can). Those 2 rounds produce a lot of eventual starters in every single draft. Go look at the results of the past drafts in the 3rd & 4th round.

Call me crazy, but I believe in Ireland. We had 3 picks in the 3rd last year. The outcome was Kamara, Anzalone, & Hendrickson.
