#Saints D was fun to watch today. A lot of nickel and dime lineups with a lot of pass rushers on field together. Some lineups with no DTs.

For example, sometimes Will Smith was on the edge for #Saints. Sometimes he had his hand on the ground with another LB outside of him.

#Saints ILB Lofton shot inside for what would have been a sack of Drew Brees if they were going full contact at start of team drills.

Great talk with #Saints DL coach Bill Johnson. Said more important than scheme is "energy." "We lost our energy last year."

I never know what to think about news like this. Does this mean the Defense is playing really good or that the O-Line is playing like crap?

This is good news but I'm keeping a very wait and see attitude about this D. I'm optimistic but not confident.

I like hearing news like that.

Sounds like the defense revolves around Will Smith.

From the T-P piece:

quote:

Johnson said the biggest difference between a 3-4 and a 4-3 is that it's harder for a quarterback to decifer which players will be rushing and which players will be dropping in coverage.

This excites me a lot, you could tell that the players just weren't all that excited to play because it was clear Spags system wasn't a fit.

Even if the defense still sucks, I expect it to get back to GW style where they at least get enough TOs and stop to win games. The switch to more man over zone will help this as our secondary is designed for that, hoping the 3-4 change will then bring more sacks which I think it will.

yeah, I guess he didn't have that aggressive mentality that they had become used to???

he ran more of a read-and-react 4-3 defense where as GW had run more of an attacking style. So it seems like Ryan wants to get back to that and throw in some new wrinkles along the way...

believe it or not, the defense collected a decent amount of turnovers last year. They finished #12 in takeaways but since they were bad in every other facet, it was overlooked.

I like these quotes but I am skeptical if we're going to see a transition to the 3-4 that works and doesn't frick us this season.

Lol. It doesn't, and if it did that would be the worst news in ages.

I saw enough of the rah rah rah quotes last year, so ill wait until the season starts before I get excited about the defense.
