The only thing that makes since here is the Saints thinking they might get a team to trade above them to get Hooker, sliding a player they want closer to their spot.

Having Hooker on the roster gives them (in theory) something then never had with Brees. A viable starting QB in the case they need to move on Carr.

If we need to "move on" from Carr we are absolutely fricked as a franchise.

Again I wouldn't pick him with 29 or 40, But at 71 he would have value for the Saints.

That's even worse b/c we wouldn't have the 5-year rookie deal

Its in every thread. With you attemptting to make the same point.

Repeatedly.

Which is why you get folks on the attack against you.

Swami’s crystal ball says…… you cant predict the future.

Example. If we draft Hooker, Carr gets hurt, and Hooker plays and is awesome, and we cut ties with Carr because Hooker is that good, then we wouldnt be fricked would we.

Youre a doomsday spewing Karen man.

Yeah so much worse to have a first round talent plus the qb

I think most said it here, that Carr is in NOLA for at least 2. So, are the Saints "fricked" if they move on after two? Or are they fricked after 1? Define fricked?

Maybe you attack him because you don’t get what he’s saying, your example suggests you really don’t.

You would still have to pay Carr, which would cost a lot against the cap, but I’m sure you’re part of the “cap doesn’t exist” crowd. Also if they take Hooker, who is already 25 in the first then they can’t take someone else, but the team has other needs (does that make one a “Karen”) or are we allowed to say the roster has holes?

The Saints are, for at least the next 3 years all in on Carr, if he struggles or gets hurt, how, exactly wouldn’t they be in a bad position?

So much overreaction because the Saints are meeting with a player prior to the draft. The horror.

A fact is Hooker would likely be a top 15 pick had he not blown out his knee.

Could also be that they are taking a page out of Payton's books. It is assumed that Atl & TB will not be drafting a QB in the 1st round as the roll with Ridder & Baker. But there is a chance they take a shot with a player like Hooker if he falls to them in the 2nd (or they jump to 30/31 for the 5th year option). So, it would make sense to interview and get to know someone that you could very well see twice a year for the next 10+ years.

There are circumstances where this is not a true statement. If this team drafts Hooker in the 2nd or 3rd and realize in 2023 or 2024 that he should be their guy going forward. They will have him on a very cheap rookie deal for another 2-3 years. As long as Loomis doesn't screw around with Carr's base salary in 2024 (one of the circumstances needed) they could walk from Carr after 2024 w a cap hit of "only" $27.1M.

There is also the possibility that it takes Hooker a few years, plus a few to vet Carr and realize Hooker is the better option in 2025. Then they have Hooker for 1 more year on a rookie deal w/ an $11.4M dead cap hit (again, assuming ML doesn't f with his salary).

And we all realize screwing with salaries is one of Loomis' things. If they know they will be moving on from a QB, you know for a fact they will figure out a way to manipulate the cap without touching that player's #. With all that said, I still think this is nothing more than an interview with a potential future opponent.

And to put some numbers to the picks (although they will go up a certain percentage)

40th pick: Year 1 cap hit $1.5M, Year 2 $1.9M, Year 3 $2.3M, Year 4 $2.7M

71st pick: Year 1 cap hit $983k, Year 2 $1.2M, Year 3 $1.5M, Year 4 $1.7M

So a QB taken in the 2nd or 3rd round would have an extremely low cap hit; which could let a team move on from an expensive contract if the rookie out plays the starter.

I'd be kinda upset if we get him in round 1 or 2. If we hadn't signed Carr I would like it more but if we are that convicted about him to take him at 29 then we probably shouldn't have signed Carr in the first place.

Assuming Carr plays for 3 years, are you comfortable paying him market rate for a starting QB without having him play as a starter? At 28?

There is a reason the Ravens traded up to get Lamar in the 1st. The 5-year deal gives 6 years of flexibility (with 1 Franchise year). After the 1st, it's typically a 3 or 4 year deal, so you have to make a decision quicker. We already have Carr for 3-4 years.

No.

I was responding directly to the hypothetical of another post, making that assumption for his hypothetical.

We're analyzing potential paths, so some assumptions will be required for each path.

Nobody is making predictions you moron.

That depends on what we do with his $30M base salary prior to year 2. We could cut him with moderate pain if we don't touch the base salary, after year 2.

Which creates the same overall issue just by death of 1000 papercuts. Carving up all that cap room from other deals pushes the same amount of money down the road.

Then we have to make a major decision on a near-30 QB with 1 year of starting data. It's not ideal.

Not ideal but could also help with negotiations. Most likely won't demand to be paid like a top 5 QB with the limited experience, so may be able to get him for a little less. Watching what Love does this offseason could give insight to what would happen in a similar situation (obviously assuming they draft Hooker).

Another avenue no one has considered in this thread on why the team would interview a QB in the draft. Winston is a FA w/ a $10+M cap hit after this season. They will need another back-up QB, so do you keep rotating vet QBs to be that guy or do you roll w a young guy at a reduced salary for a few years then rinse & repeat when that rookie contract is up.

Just FWIW, Love is younger than Hooker

I'd hope we wouldn't use such a high and valuable pick on a backup QB when you can sign them for so-so money every year. Look at what we paid Dalton last year.

I don't see it, now that Carr was signed and Winston is back. I don't think its QB at 29 or 40. It just doesn't pass the smell test.
