PFF Saints biggest offseason need

Drew Brees is running out of time. He turns 38 in just two weeks, and the New Orleans defense is nowhere close to being considered “playoff-caliber.” Brees just finished throwing for over 5,000 yards for the fifth time in his career; there have been five quarterbacks in NFL history to throw over 5,000 yards in one season, and he has more 5,000-yard seasons than the other four combined. While Brees does have a Super Bowl ring to his name already, his immense talent is being wasted by what has been one of the worst defenses the past few seasons. Clearly the Saints don’t have an issue on offense.
On defense, the Saints have a superstar in DE Cameron Jordan (92.0 grade, No. 3 ranked edge defender) and a couple of other decent pieces that the team can build around. CB Delvin Breaux has shown good play, but took a step back this year, which could be due to his return from injury. The coverage unit grades as the worst in the NFL, with safeties Jairus Byrd and Kenny Vaccaro only grading barely above-average in coverage. In order to get Brees one final push at another Super Bowl, they need to make a splash signing. Although I am not a fan of such moves, when your future Hall-of-Famer QB has a shrinking window, taking risks to get back into the playoffs is necessary. Texans CB A.J. Bouye is slated to be an unrestricted free agent, and finished the season as the sixth-highest-graded cornerback in the NFL. Dallas’ Morris Claiborne is a solid option, as well, as he finished as the 12th-ranked CB in 2016.
TLDR : our coverage unit graded worst in the league, mentions Mo Claiborne and AJ Bouye as possible quick fixes as Drew's window slowly closes

That happens when your top 5 CBs are in street clothes. Can't remember seeing so many players at one position get injured.
That being said we can't rely on them. Need to get one high priced FA CB and draft one as well.

Yep. Do what the Giants did.
Use big money to sign a starter. Have a quality CB on the roster (Breaux) already. Use a high draft pick on a corner.
Hopefully will land you 3 solid corners to start the year

We definitely have to figure out what position we can get for the best price. If we were to get a CB in FA we will have to address pass rush in the draft.
I hope we can sign Gilmore from Buffalo, but he will probably cost too much. We also have to consider a RG in FA. We have to keep Brees on his feet to make a run to LII.

The Saints lost Breaux for most of the year and their projected #2 CB P. J. Williams for almost the entire year. Damian Swann and Kyle Wilson both also found themselves on IR. The entire group of corners were injured and the Saints played almost all of 2016 with backups and street free agents at corner.
The personnel is on the team at CB. I'm not necessarily concerned, however I would be good with the team making a splash for a corner in free agency. Although the shelf life is short for corners, so is Drew Brees' window.
How did PFF fail to mention the lines?

Nice to see Mo Claiborne finally turn it around.

I agree that we need some help at CB, but if you add 2 guys...then you have to get rid of some guys that are rosterable CB's.
Breaux, PJ Williams, Sterling Moore, Crawley, Swann, Webb, Kyle Wilson, & DeVante Harris will all be fighting for a roster spot in training camp. I'm not saying we shouldn't add 2 new guys, but it's something to think about.

I would love Mo Claiborne, he'd come in as a proven guy that finally has adapted to the NFL game. I would love to have Bouye as well, but I feel like someone is gonna give him a deal much more than he's worth.

We can't count on any of those guys.
We have to add at least 2 legit CBs (one veteran and one rookie).
Hell, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see one high priced FA CB, a mid-tier to bargain FA CB, and a mid round rookie.
Its a pretty dire need at this point.
I'd day:
Pass Rusher
CB
LB
G
Another LB
Backup Tackle
Backup S

We went hard after Norman and if the rumors were true about us trying to trade for Haden,I fully expect the Saints to go after one of the top CBs in free agency.

Not too late to even trade for Haden either. There's a lot of defensive talent in the draft and free agency, we should be able to get it done.

Same here. I think Bouye is going to get a monstrous contract from someone but you might see them go after the next 2-3 guys on the list.

Anyone have their overall season grades?

Hopefully we can land a good veteran corner in FA then add a pass rusher in the draft.
normally I'd be one of the main ones on here bitching about the LB's but I think D-line/CB's trump them as far team needs?
but I guess if the top pass rushers are off the board by our pick.. maybe a solid pivot would be to Rueben Foster at LB.

If we have only half as many starters knocked out with injuries this coming preseason as we did in 2016 the defense will be a much better unit by default
Posted on 1/9/17 at 8:58 pm to GynoSandberg
Mo is always hurt. Bouye is the target.

The Saints have to find a creative way to keep those two rosterable CB's while drafting one and adding one in FA.
The Saints go through CB's like newborn babies go through diapers.
