I think PFF missed the mark here. Penning got beat pretty repeatedly against the pass rush. For a couple of series, we changed our entire offense and blocking schemes to give him help on that side.

He did well against the run and he did have a few nice pash rush reps. But a 90 grade is disingenuous. I have hope for him later this year or next year or as an extra run blocker on day 1, but he’s not ready to be a day 1 starter at LT.

He plays defense now.

Did you really say that penning is a bust?

I said he’s a year 1 bust in the sense Olave is a year 1 stud.

Penning was abused nearly every passing attempt in first half. Still need to watch second half.

If Hurst is our starter at LT I'd be looking to play Penning at Guard, he could be a top 5-10 Guard this year

Some context

57 snaps

29 runs - 98.6 grade
28 passes - 28.6 grade

I don’t think anyone is claiming he did well in pass pro. He will be a fine guard

My only comment about penning was year 1. It’s a disappointment if he doesn’t beat out hurst.

That’s an idiotic take. No way i thought coming from a small school he would start year one. I knew this when he was drafted.

I thought he played bad. That's is interesting.

I hope Penning pans out, but that grade makes no sense at all.

Even if he doesn't pan out at tackle he will replace ruiz at guard.

That makes a lot more sense. Still not sure how that averages out to a 90 plus overall grade per PFF.

63.6 is the average if you just divide by 2. Round up to 64 since there was one more run than pass. That seems about right based off what we saw.

How in the hell do those grades on basically the same amount of plays each, average to a 90+ overall grade? PFF once again showing how much of a joke their "grading" is. Makes zero sense.

He looked every bit a starter in run blocking, but his pass blocking could use some work.

I agree with this assessment wholeheartedly. I was at the game and sat literally on the 50 yard line in the 500 section. So I had a really good view (like being in the pressbox) of the game from an overhead perspective.

If Penning graded the "best" among all rookie 1st round picks, then that does speak very well of the 2022 rookie class. Penning is obviously a big, strong guy who is very nimble. However, this 1st NFL game showed me that he has a lot to learn. While I thought that some of his pass block reps were Ok, he really struggled in pass pro. It wasn't as if he was going up against top line NFL defensive ends. On one particular play he got beat on an inside move and fell to the ground. Even my daughter was like "really?" when she saw the replay.

At this point I am not expecting Trevor to slide into the the starting LT spot anytime soon. Hurst may not be great, but he'll definitely get the job done. I'm just hoping at this point that Marrone and Zach can refine Penning's raw talent and get him to play with more control.

Yeah, if your name is Taysom Hill and that play is a pass.

Peat will inevitably be out for several games at different points during the season and Penning will have ample opportunity to play guard.

yep. his pass blocking was horrible and we were fortunate on a couple of them. ian book's knee was almost destroyed on first play in 2nd half.
