I'm a bit baffled by all the fear of and anger at Payton leaving for another team. Considering that the previous 2 seasons have been 7-9 finishes (those records are better than the actual teams), it begs the question why there is so much animosity at the thought of him leaving. Yes he brought us some great seasons along with a Super Bowl; however, his teams of late have been poorly coached messes.

I personally am happy with him leaving or staying. I think he has done enough to warrant more opportunities to fix this team, but I also think he has damaged it enough to be sent off and allow a new coach to attempt the fix. I understand both sides of the fence.

I don't get the absolute fanaticism regarding him remaining as coach though. Can some of you explain this to me?

He's a good coach in a league filled with shitty coaches.

Good coaches are hard to find.

It probably has more to do with the fear of the unknown. Who could we draw as a replacement? Sure we still have Brees, but the defense is a mess albeit with some nice young pieces.

Tell me who would be a better alternative? We've made poor personnel decisions. It is a godsend that we've gone 7-9 the last two seasons. I know a lot of it is Drew but look what he did with the backup generator for that one game this year. He's a solid coach.

I never imagined the Saints would win a SB. Then Payton came along. Enough said.

I'm afraid Ditka will be the next coach if SP leaves.

He is a great coach. He has shown tendencies to miss a lot on players he drafts/signs to FA. Now if the GM portion of his resume is mostly because Loomis has made those decisions (unlikely) than his star is less tarnished. Had he had a stronger football knowledgeable GM, sky's the limit. He also needs to get rid of his cronies. Other than that he is as good as it gets in the NFL. It's kind of like QBs. There are really not that many worth a damn right now. If you have a truly elite QB, you hold on to it. Even if they aren't perfect. Payton fits that bill as a coach.

This is my main concern as well. We could trade one coach for a bad one. We may get a coach that will keep us at 5-7 wins... oh wait.

I am unsure that Payton can right this. This season should've been a team that started off shitty and showed progress down the stretch. That didn't happen.

What I have been seeing though is less fear of the unknown and more white knuckle gripping onto Payton as the greatest coach in the league. It appears the loudest Payton champions here believe he is still the savior, yet his previous 2 seasons tell a different tale. I'm confused as to why the passionate belief he is this phenomenal coach.

This.

Just think back on our coaching history and tell me if you truly feel confident we'll strike gold like that again.

An argument could be made that the championship foundation has been laid and it won't be as much of a challenge for anyone incoming, but who knows.

Who could we bring in that would be better?

If someone really has to explain it to you why the Saints should keep Payton, then you just don't get it and never will.

He is one of the best coaches in the league. Top 5. Maybe Top 3. Easily.

He turned a historical bottom-dwelling franchise into one of the most successful franchises of the last 10 years. Notice the team started to slide when all the turmoil began with the ownership. Notice how when Loomis started becoming involved with Pelican operations, things started to slip even more. The front office is a mess. The ownership is a mess.

If we lost Payton, we would not be able to replace him with someone equal or better.

I agree things have been frustrating this season, and the past season, but I want Payton running this team to try and get those problems righted. We had a really solid draft (finally) but we whiffed all over free agency. Time to have another good draft and finally figure out free agency.

We have maybe 2-3 years to make one more serious run, and unless Payton stays on board with the heir to Brees, it's going to be a long time before the Saints get back to what they were under Payton and Brees.

He's one of the best coaches in the league, evidenced by every team with an opening trying to catch his ear. While he's had some rough patches, many due to front office decisions, he has mostly been consistent.

Because he is when he has a competent counterpart. The man knows offense. He's made some bad hires though.

At his worst he is a 7-9 coach

That is with shitty personnel, and a GM fricking this team over with terrible contracts

We carried the most dead money this year and played the most rookies I believe.

Our offense struggled with a bad o-line and a young WR corps.

Does a "top 5 maybe top 3 easily" coach turn in two bad season in a row? Come on now. This is irrational talk.

This is complete bullshite. If that's the case, then why are there 12 other teams in the playoffs? Each of those teams had to replace their previous coach at some point, and each of those teams are winning right now.

If you were to say we have no guarantee of getting a better coach, then you could be taken more seriously.

He does when he's handcuffed by an incompetent front office

Name me someone you view that is equal or better than Payton who is available for hire. I'll wait...
