quote:

“If this opinion in Louisiana is super unpopular,” Payton told USA TODAY Sports in a 33-minute phone conversation on Monday, his first interview since Will Smith’s death, “so be it.” In the aftermath of the senseless shooting on Saturday night that left former defensive end Smith dead – and Smith’s wife Racquel wounded -- amid a beef linked to a traffic accident, the New Orleans Saints coach is pleading for more gun control. He isn’t merely talking about tighter laws. If Payton had his druthers we’d live in a country without guns. “Two hundred years from now, they’re going to look back and say, ‘What was that madness about?’ “ Payton said. “The idea that we need them to fend off intruders … people are more apt to draw them (in other situations). That’s some silly stuff we’re hanging onto.”

quote:

“I’m not an extreme liberal,” Payton said. “I find myself leaning to the right on some issues. But on this issue, I can’t wrap my brain around it.”

Payton, who grew up in suburban Chicago, said that his philosophy was influenced by his father, an insurance claims adjuster whose line of work was filled with tragedies. He also spent six months playing in a British football league during the late 1980s, before launching his coaching career.

“I hate guns,” he said.

Payton said he is trying to remove his anti-gun bias in considering the matter, but even with that he reaches the same conclusion.

“I’ve heard people argue that everybody needs a gun,” he said. “That’s madness. I know there are many kids who grow up in a hunting environment. I get that. But there are places, like England, where even the cops don’t have guns.”

I lean heavily to the right, but I waffle on this issue constantly.

I don't see the need for our citizens to be able to get guns like they can. It is patently absurd.

Regardless, we have the 2nd Amendment, and there is just no getting around it. It is the citizens right (with limitations) as laid out in the Constitution.

Couldn't have said it better myself. He's 100 percent right.

Coach nailed it. Gun nuts just don't get it.

So if guns don't exist, does that make a murderer not a murderer? Does it make a violent person suddenly not violent?

I'm not saying that there arent way too many guns in hands that don't need to have even a water pistol, but the idea that murderers won't murder if they don't have a gun is incomplete.

Sorry, but I own several and I don't go around killing people. Should alcohol and vehicles be illegal too? Just like guns you have people who know how to be responsible with them and some who abuse them and kill with them.

Of any Western nation, we have the highest amount of gun owernship, and by far, the highest amount of gun related deaths.

Its a bit of a more complex argument than that.

We have a problem with a culture that devalues life. Guns are just a means to expressing that lack of said value. We celebrate music and media that promotes murder and violence, then want to blame everything but ourselves when things go horribly wrong.

Well if you ban guns then you have to ban lots of video games, movies, rap music, paintball, etc.....

If they take away guns from law abiding citizens nothing will stop criminals from still illegally getting them. It will basically be open season for them to do whatever the hell they want and when they want.

Incredibly dumb and naïve to think that would solve anything.

A man was murdered and his wife was shot, but you think he was better off by not having a gun to protect himself? It's already illegal for criminals to own guns, but now you want to take them away from law abiding citizens?

Gun nuts? Yeah, those silly Americans that believe in their rights.

You don't think the criminals would do the right thing and turn in their guns like the law abiding one's did?

Except that isn't true for the most part in nations like England with very tight gun control.

Eventually, over the course of 30 years or so, guns supply would dry up.

Couple of differences.

1. The primary purpose of alcohol and vehicles is not to kill
2. It's harder to get a license to drive or a beer, if you're under 21, than it is a gun

Also, for the other poster that brought up knives, it's the same argument that pittbull owners try to make. Should we ban every dog that bites? Knives are much less likely to kill than guns. Same as a pitt vs a mean chihuahua.

Finally, would not having a gun stop a bad person from killing someone? Possibly. We have a huge problem with impulse control. How many of these murders would take place if the murderer didn't have easy access to a gun? Maybe they cool off off and think better of it. There's no taking a bullet back.

And the problem is on both sides. Cops, thugs, you name it. As a country we're awfully trigger happy. I'm convinced people in this country don't have the mental capacity to understand the ramifications of their actions. Having these types of people with guns is a recipe for disaster. No, taking away guns will not stop murder, attacks, or idiots from being idiots but it will limit the damage.
