Is this a real retirement or just “retirement” from the Saints and he’ll be coaching somewhere else within 2 years?

“Stepping away” is an interesting way of phrasing it. Might be nothing or could he just be taking a year off and coming back to the Saints like in 2012

Not necessary because they will have their "new" coach within a couple of days.

Its Dennis Allen.

Ugh. Very bad news. He and Brees were the golden Era for the Saints!

I don't believe this is some big ploy to get to dallas.

Dude probably had years taken off his life this year with all the injuries and Covid stupidity. 16 years is one hell of a run in the NFL. Few coaches last half as long with one team. Only Belichick has lasted longer in the modern era....but then again, he is the devil incarnate.

It’s not nearly as impressive as Belicheck. Remember Sean had a year off in between to recharge the batteries.

We have so much talent on both sides of the ball. That's why Payton leaving is so surprising to me.

While I am surprised he's leaving, I cannot say "we have so much talent on both sides of the ball" with confidence with a new coach coming in. Even if we just promote Dennis Allen to HC and Ryan Neilsen to DC from within and retain Pete Carmichael.

For a new coach, not hall of fame offensive guru Sean Payton, it's going to be a tall order

Offensive needs:
QB1 (Don't have a legit starting QB under contract)
LT1 (if we don't keep Armstead)
LG1 (Peat is overpaid & ofinjured)
RG1 (Need competition for Ruiz
WR2 (Possibly even WR1 depending on Thomas)
TE1 (Trautman hasnt shown he's truly ready, Johnson not complete enough)

Defense:
DE Cam Jordan came on strong at the end, does he have another 17 game iron man season in him or will father time kick in like it looked like it was early in this season. Will he be a cap casualty?
DE Can Davenport he be the man for 17 games?
DE Can Payton Turner produce, and stay healthy for 17 games?
LB Can Davis continue this level of production another year older?
LB Can we re-sign Kwon?
CB3 Will we be able to retain Roby?
FS Will re-sign Marcus Williams
SS Can we afford to retain M.Jenkins, plus he's another ageing veteran, can he keep up?

STs
K Can Lutz return to form?

If you think about we have Eric McCoy, Ryan Ramzyck, Kamara right now as the only 3 unquestionable people you can count on on offense for 2022.
Defensively you have Shy Tuttle, Malcolm Roach, Pete Werner, Lattimore, and Adebo. Everyone else has either age/production related concerns or are potential cap casualties.

I think all things considered you have find a way to keep guys like M.Thomas & C.Jordan

You people are worthless.

It's obvious Paytons success was due to Brees. Dennis Allen is going to be a great HC for the Saints.
