Marcus Davenport- long term contract discussion

I think most of us can admit that the talent is real, he's a dual threat in pass rush and run stoppage, he's strong, long, and has produced when on the field. yes. Problem is being on the field. His talent probably warrants a top 5 type contract long term. His production hasn't been there. Coming off 9 sacks in 11 games.
So question, what type of production and health combo are you looking for this year to warrant such a large contract? Even if he stays healthy for say 14-15 games this year, does that make you comfortable enough to extend long term? He's a talent that would be sorely missed if he walks after this year.

The best ability is Availability…….can’t expect him to start playing 13/15 games a year. Pass if he wants top 5 money.

My initial thought would be extend him in the $15M per year range (puts him as the 15th-17th highest) w/ per game bonuses, sack escalators, etc.

He sucks. He’s basically half a defensive end because he can only play half a season at the most.

I think it's fair to sign him to a fair size contract like 15m with incentives, games played, sacks, all pro which can net him 20mil

When healthy he is a load. Great against the run and pass.
He has missed a full season of games in 4 years. 17 games.

No thanks on the 15 per year salary. Start much lower than that then throw in the bonuses and escalators based on games played and production. I love him on the field but that isn't often enough

Honestly, I’d consider extending him now. Cam finally turned it on and had a great season, and we drafted Turner in the 1st round who seemed to have been pretty impressive before he got hurt. And we’ve got Granderson, etc…we are pretty good at DE without Davenport. Which gives us leverage, and due to his injury history, he may take something like $12-$14/per now instead of gambling on himself. And for him, it’d be much more of a “gamble” than a “bet” at this point.
I think he’s All Pro/best player on our defense if healthy, so if he actually does stay healthy and put a monster season together, he’d probably price himself out of what we could reasonably afford, considering our depth at DE. And he’d have no incentive to re-sign with us over any other team at that point, whereas we’re obviously the only team that can offer him anything long-term right now. I’m a big fan and think he can be great, and I’d hate for us to be put in the weird position of hoping he doesn’t have a great season, just so that we can afford to keep him.

I'd offer him 18 mill a year right now... maybe around 40 mill guaranteed and hope he takes that.

I just said 12-14 now based on the 15 number thrown out after this season. But I haven’t studied the DE numbers throughout the league, but if the top guys project to make $25+ after the market is re-set next offseason, I’d be fine with offering him 18 now with only 40 guaranteed. I don’t think that’s a huge risk for somebody of his talent and production when healthy. I do think it’s a risk to let him play this 5th year without an extension, though.

In the past the saints would get ahead of some of these contracts.
