Payton led a private workout of Mahomes before the draft

Made mention that they’d be open to drafting a QB rd 1

The golfer who was in town for the Zurich and in the Saints war room made metion that they were all over Mahomes. On the phone talking deals and such

Mahomes is good but he’s not the first QB to go on a hot steak out the gate. He’s already started coming back down to earth his last 6 quarters. He will fade back with the rest of the pack eventually.

Lattimore was DROY, he is on track to be one of the best players from the draft. We did fine. If you check the tape of past DROY it’s littered with all timers and barely any busts

Payton leaked it to everyone who would listen that he LOVED Mahomes..

Which, knowing him, means he wanted someone to jump us and hopefully force a defensive starter down to us

Here's my take:

I'm glad it worked out the way it did. Here's how the trickle down effect would have worked. Had we taken Mahomes, would we have drafted offense with the other 1st (Ram) or worse yet our 3rd (Kamara)? And... had we drafted QB in the first, would we have still taken Taysom from GB as a project QB and/or kept him on the 53? And... Bridgewater? Wow, that single event changed everything. No Lattimore, or Kamara, or Taysom would change the make up of what we have going on right now.

Seems like lattimore benefited from having to work out all spring to improve his draft stock his rookie season. Right now, looks like he didn’t do shite this offseason and is slowly coming around as the season goes on.

Yes, but the Saints were not presented with that scenario. It sounds like in Mahomes v. Lattimore decision, they would have taken Mahomes. Do you think they should have given up another early round pick to move up to get Mahomes?

That pick to move up could have been what we used to pick Kamara.

I would take Lattimore and Kamara (the 2017 Off. and Def. Rookies of the year) over Mahomes and it's not even close.

is this the thread where we mull over draft picks we never had a chance to draft?

Man I hate that the Saints missed out on Ladainian Tomlinson and Peyton Manning.

What they thinking not drafting earlier.

I've said many times on here Andy Reid traded up to grab Mahomes because he knew Payton wanted him. The fat bitch.

The Saints wanted him but the Chiefs traded up about 10 spots to the spot ahead of the Saints to take him because Reid knew that Payton was going to take him. That is why we got Lattimore.

I think it was discussed many times around the draft that they liked Mahomes, but still would have taken Lattimore over Mahomes.

I remember watching Mahomes (Texas Tech) play versus LSU in 2015 and remember saying to myself how this guy was a beast of a QB and would be deadly with even a mediocre oline. His oline was absolutely abysmal at Tech and he was running for his life on almost every play, but was still dropping dimes all over our defense. Just a straight playmaker. If I remeber correctly, he threw for almost 400 yards and like 4 TDs that game.

Same here. I came away from that game very impressed with Mahomes.

Yeah, I know how it all went down, but like I said in my OP, I just assume we never had a chance at him....sure looks like the Chiefs made the right move.

Are you going to be the guy that doesn't resign Brees to start Maholmes?
Yes, I'd put the next 10-15 years over the next 1-2, especially when Mahomes could have been the backup for those 1-2 years.

I have heard from rock solid sources we were for sure going to take him. KC thought so & traded up to get the pick right before us & took him.

I remember Payton saying on Dan Patrick Show that they had Lattimore ranked ahead of Mahomes, and they didn't expect Lattimore to be available when the Saints picked. Would've taken Mahomes if Lattimore wasn't there and Mahomes hadn't been drafted.

I would rather Mahomes if we needed a quarterback.

We don’t, so I’m glad we picked Lattimore.

The Saints could've traded up a spot to get to 10, but they didn't. They probably felt he would fall

You guys have already enjoyed elite QB play for more than a decade (Brees will make history next Monday), hopefully Mahomes can do that for us.
