Funny enough I feel like our biggest first round hits under him were Latt and Ram and we didn’t move up. May be drawing a blank but I don’t remember moving up for anyone who has REALLY been special.

2011: Cam Jordan (24), Mark Ingram (28)
- Cam Jordan arguably a top 5 Saints player all-time. Didn't trade up
- Ingram a top 3 RB (not that hard) in Saints history, traded up.

2013: Kenny Vaccaro (15)
- Meh

2014: Brandin Cooks (20)
- Traded up to grab him, a solid #1 WR but my God he's had such a weird career.

2015: Andrus Peat (13), Stephone Anthony (31)
- Peat although overpaid, had been a solid player his entire career. Anthony was a bust

2016: Sheldon Rankins (12)
- Turning a corner before he got injured, not a bust but not worth it

2017: Marshon Lattimore (11), Ryan Ramczyk (32)
- Both at points in their career were top 5 players at their respective positions, now its all about health

2018: Marcus Davenport (14)
- Traded up, we saw how that went

2020: Cesar Ruiz (24)
- Not so hot...

2021: Payton Turner (28)
- Really bad.

2022: Chris Olave (11), Trevor Penning (19)
- Olave has shown to be a solid receiver, Penning is now injury prone.

That being said, trading back has not been an option, but boy it would have been nice.

Not first round or third round, but they traded up for Morstead in the fifth.

what frustrates me about Loomis is the years where it absolutely makes sense to move up (like jumping the Vikings for Jefferson instead of settling for Ruiz), he seems to sit on his hands. When it seems like we will have someone we need drop to us (Lamar Jackson), they trade up for Davenport.

Yeah kind of shows the flaw in his logic, which presumes the draft will follow your board exactly. The value in drafting is over-drafting guys at their position (or getting a generational QB). The philosophy of trading down is that the draft is still largely a crapshoot and giving yourself more opportunities to over-draft increases your odds of drafting quality players.

Loomis just confirmed that they're, effectively, arrogant, and believe they're so good at drafting, the overall data simply doesn't apply to them. They believe they're so elite in identifying star talent, they can use draft capital to move up to get "players they love". This argument looks a lot worse over his entire career when comparing it to the Ireland era.

Lattimore and Ram show that waiting on talent who falls is possible. I mean that almost applied to Mahomes for us, and it also applied to Marcus Williams and Kamara (who we did trade up for, but later in the draft than you'd expect his talent to be drafted, in hindsight. We didn't trade up into the late 1st for him).

We have to stop drafting Ruizes, Davenports, and Turners to puff our chests out that much, IMHO.

This roster has been stripped of its depth. We need all the picks we can get to restock that depth with cheap rookie contracts. Loomis doesn’t care though, he knows he can do whatever he wants and he still will keep his job. Loomis should be locked out of the draft room and Ireland be in charge of who and where we draft players.

I would assume that their drafting philosophy is similar as they are still together. Or Ireland runs the draft show which I don't see but who knows.

i agree with trusting the scouting.

however, he seems to completely ignore the future value of picks. the annual moves to get under the cap will have to end at some point. this increases the value of future picks.

If you trust your scouting, that should enable you to be more creative and trade up or down as the situation warrants.

Trusting your scouting shouldn’t mean only moving up.

We have consistently spent draft picks at the expense of roster depth.
