Let's revisit the 2019 draft class

I mean it wasn't a great draft but look at the draft selections. Saints did better than most teams would have done.

meh, we got 2 pretty good players and a depth piece from a draft most teams struck out on.

The CGJ trade is a result of the saints drafting so well. It will continue to happen. You can’t draft well and expect to keep every player. It sucks losing a guy like that but I’ll take that if they continue to draft well.

No, it's a result of him being hard headed and wanting more than he is worth.

This is a perfect argument against trading up based on the assumption that we are so great at drafting

How? You got mccoy by trading up.
I'm not a huge fan of always trading up but what did they do wrong in this draft.
You got two top starters at center and nickel in the 2nd and 4th. Both players will earn top contracts at their positions.

The reference was the 2022 draft trades.
That philosophy only makes sense if you are legitimately great at drafting. Drafts like 2019 show that we aren't. We can be, but all teams can be. You have to do 2017-ish stuff every year to keep trading future picks.

Well we got 1 starter and 2 years of good nickel play by a starter for the Eagles.

We had a 6th rd and 2 7th rd picks, which are usually considered throwaway picks, if you can get anything out of them it's a win. One of the 7th rd guys is still on the roster.
CGJ in the 4th is a very solid pick, 2 yrs as a nickel with lots of playing time and production. He chose to try to leverage that into something the Saints didn't want to pay or do, so they traded him for what they could; he wasn't cut.

No we have 1 starter in the 2nd.
We only had CGJ for a couple years and he wasn't really a "starter". And we lost him for nothing. Long-term we have 1 player from the draft.
That's not going to cut it if we keep selling our future and giving up value to move up.
