Shawn Knight..... I remember he was so bad we swapped him for Denver's first round bust (Ted Gregory ??) a small noseguard... then we quickly cut that guy !!

That's pretty hard to top.

IMO you can't even mention Erxleben because first off shame on the Saints for picking a kicker in the first round even though he was expected to be drafted very high. Secondly he did go on to have a pretty good career as a punter. 8 years in the NFL and averaged 40.6 yards per punt, not bad!

When the Saints drafted Vaughn Dunbar I so wanted them to pick Ashley Ambrose with that pick late in the first round.

I remember Vaughn first preseason game he ran for three or four TD in that game everyone was so excited.
Opening game he tripped all over his own feet hitting the hole and even ran into Derek Kennard's back side on a goal like run. Derek was quite a large man so how could a RB not see him and rune right straight into him is beyond me.

Now if you want to talk about what could have been lets talk about Rueben Mayes or Barry Word two RB selected by the saints who could have been great in Black and Gold.

Reuben Mayes was a good guy.

When he was drafted, the Saints held training camp at SLU in Hammond. Local kids would beg for autographs before and after practice. One kid, who was about 8 or 10 and lived across the street from the athletic building, invited Mayes to his house for lunch or dinner. Mayes thanked him, but begged off. He told the kid how busy they were - practices, meetings, etc - and that they also had to eat their meals at the training table with the team.

A couple of weeks into camp, Mora finally gives the players a day off. It was a Sunday. The kid invites Mayes to dinner again and is very persuasive - I know you have the day off, you can't be going home to Canada, come eat dinner at my house. For whatever reason, Mayes accepts. The kid goes home and tells his parents and siblings that Rueben Mayes is going to be joining them for Sunday dinner. Of course, no one believes him.

Noontime Sunday, there's a knock at the door. Who's there? Rueben Mayes! How cool is that?

He talked his way into Sunday dinner with Rueben Mayes. What did you accomplish by age nine?

Didn't Nolan draft Erx because he was planning to have him do double-duty as both a kicker and a punter? I recall tales that Erxleben kicked a 70 yd FG in college or something...
however, it wasn't taken into consideration that he'd always kicked off a 2" tee and it turns out he was a lousy placekicker and an average punter.

It's more sickening when you see that Kellen Winslow was drafted just two spots after Russell.

As for Shawn Knight... that pick was certainly a dud but the rest of that draft more than excused the poor choice.

Lonzell Hill
Steve Trapilo
Milton Mack
Gene Atkins
Toi Cook
and Robert Clark were all drafted in that same draft after Knight and all were contributors to our early successes under Mora.

Really?

Name 10 ahead of him. I'd say a guy with so much potential can be a bust if he's unhealthy.

Vaughn Dunbar isn't even in the top 10 (bottom 10?) worst draft picks in Saints history.

These were worse:

Russell Erxleben
Rick Middleton (when Randy Gradishar was still on the board)
Les Kelly
Shaewn Knight
Larry Burton
Kurt Schumacher
John Shinners
Joe Campbell
Kevin Hardy
Royce Smith

This list has to start and end with Alex Molden. The front office chose him at 11 over Eddie George, Ray Lewis and Marvin Harrison.

All the more unforgivable considering they were college teammates at the same position and everybody knew Gradishar was better coming out of college. Kinda like when the Dolphins took Eric Kumerow when Spielman was still on the board (even though one was inside and one was outside).

Would Alvin Toles rate anywhere in the top 10?.... Dude only played LB AT Tenneneesee for 2 years before the Saints drafted him #1 back in 1985 with the 24th pick... He did play behind 2 all Pro Lbers in Sam Mills and Vaughn Johnson though... Mostly a special teams player whose career ended in 1988 from a serious knee injury...I don't remember him doing much as a 1st round pick....

No, he might not even be in the top ten. The Saints have a long history of bad 1st round and overall bad picks.

Toi Cook led to success? He was worse than Jason David. His was the original Toast. The strings of obscenities my father yelled at him every game was why I sound like a sailor half the time.
