I heard someone on ESPN (may have been Clayton) saying "Rooney Rule" applies...

if the Saints want to hire Parcells on an "interim" basis and that cannot be correct.

The Saints have a head coach (Payton). He has not been fired, nor has he resigned. He has been suspended without pay for a year. The position is not "vacant" per se. The Saints are actually looking for a true "interim" head coach (not a replacement).

I seem to recall that where previous interim coaches have come in (or been elevated), no "Rooney Rule" requirements were in place. It was only when the team decided to fill the position at the end of the season that the RR had to be followed.

Little help please?

Who cares. Bring in Denny Green, shake his hand, announce Parcells the next day.

Why can't that be correct? You think ESPN let Clayton just make stuff up or that what you seem to recall about previous interim coaches trumps Claytons knowledge and research on it?

The reason why previous interim coaches werent Rooney ruled was bc they were in-house coaches. If you go outside the organization for the interim Rooney rule applies

Why the frick does this keep getting brought up? So what if the Saints have to conduct a farcical interview before hiring the guy they want? Of all the reasons Saints fans can choose to be outraged at the league over right now, some of you are choosing the Rooney Rule

I'm sure the Saints will have no problem finding a black NFL coach with no self respect who will come in so the Saints can do its part in fulling the NFL's racist policy--The "Rooney Rule".

If Benson really wanted to give Goodell a "frick you", he should pull some black homeless guy off Poydras, take him to lunch, and then hire Parcells.

I wouldn't call the Rooney rule racist. It doesn't force you to hire minority candidates. I think it's patronizing and silly.

Goodell confirmed that they would have to follow the Rooney Rule if they do not hire from within, AND they could not hire anyone on another staff. So, they would have to interview someone not on another NFL staff...Curtis Johnson.

Not fair.

Yeah maybe trade rumors and FA signings but not a leagues hiring policy.

Exactly, I don't get why this keeps getting brought up like it's a huge obstacle. Like others said, they'll probably take a ride uptown, hang out with Curtis Johnson, ask him how the family and his team are doing, and then come to terms with Parcells.

Smith: "Saayy whaaaaa....."

Benson: "Naw...just kiddin'. frick you."

read a good suggestion...

Joe Horn

He's already spoken out against the NFL on the matter. I'm sure he could make a good show of it and rub it in the Commissioners face.

JOE HORN PRESS CONFERENCE afterwards

Thank you for coming today. I first want to thank the Saints for inviting me to be considered for the interim head coaching position. My greatest NFL memories are here and it is an honor to still be associated with this proud organization. <his cell phone rings and he answers> "$500? No, no, make it more. $1000 if it is a divisional game." <puts phone away> As I was saying... I have thought long and hard about the idea of being the coach of the Saints. We had a great meeting. I am still in discussion with them giving my advice on several particular team matters <cell rings and he answers again> "Rodgers? Yeah. Newton? Yeah. Eli? Not sure. Ryan? (laughs) No, nothing at all. Don't worry about him. Okay. <puts phone away again> Sorry about that. As I said, I have been in ongoing discussion about team matters. As to the head coaching position though I am afraid I will have to remove myself from consideration. At this time I must put all my focus into developing my new product. <puts on apron and displays bottle> Joe Horn's Cajun Classic BBQ Sauce! yes, this delicious homemade recipe is now available to you...
