Would you trade one more year of Brees if it means we lock up Bridgewater long term or would you want one more year of Brees if it means we lose Bridgewater?

How is this a question? We don’t even know what we have in Bridgewater. He could be done. He could be terrible.

Brees is playing at an MVP level this season and the team should stay mostly in tact. Give me the chance of back to back Super Bowls every day

I'd rather Brees. 2019 roster is loaded.

Trade a top three QB of all time and a #1 or #2 in the MVP voting this year...for a guy long term we are not sure can play at a high level.

Let’s see if TB looks like he did in preseason this year this Sunday.

Teddy seems like a good guy, but I am not sure why so many are enamoured with him on here. He was solid with Minny, but it’s not like he was Brees’ level or the like.

Teddy wants to be a starter, and if Brees wants to stay another year......Teddy should be allowed to walk.

The best bet in 2020 (if Brees hangs em up) is to do everything possible to draft the future. With the savings not being paid to Brees, lock up some of the core pieces before you have to start paying QB money.

for years i thought brees was older then brady

brady is 40, brees is 38, so i think with the new rules we can expect brees to play at minimum another 2 years, maybe 4 or 5 at most.

its possible teddy never plays here as a starter if brees does manage to make another 5 years

Brees looks like he can still play. He still has a good touch on deep balls, not as elite as his prime but still good enough.

I remember when I said brady's passes started looking like wounded ducks last postseason and people said I was wrong. This year he's looked like he's on the decline with some of those routine passes.

I'll invoke the John Elway rule, and keep Brees.

Consider Elway's career- phenomenal talent that carried his team to several Super Bowls basically by himself, ended up losing those, and basically spent the better part of his career being exciting but not extremely relevant.
Towards the end of his career, when his body slowed down and his numbers dropped, the Broncos built a team that could run and play defense, and let Elway basically be a coach on the field. His knowledge of the game allowed for the right calls at the line, he still could pass when it was needed (but he no longer had to carry the team), and he won 2 Super Bowls.

Look at Brees- not Elway's talent, but insane numbers most of his career. Did get one Super Bowl win, but mostly he passed for 5000 yds for a 7-9 team, which would have likely been 4-12 without him.
Now his career is winding down and he's not the gunner he was... but he's at the helm of a strong running team with a good and improving defense. Like Elway, JUST like Elway in fact, Brees now can run this offense from the field, see what the defense gives up each pre-snap, and control things to a point that he should get the W probably 75% of the time for the next 2-3 years (that's 12-4 seasons).
Ingram and Kamara + the O line as configured, we should be able to run effectively unless they dare Brees to pass- at which point he can still kill you.

Brees is in great shape for his age, and the rules have changed to protect him more. He can probably go 4 years more with plenty of effectiveness. He might contemplate retiring before then, but if he's running a monster team that might change his mind.

Also, I suspect Bridgewater is being looked at by several other teams to start as of 2019. He's very likely going to be auditioning for that in week 17, with Sean Payton calling the plays against a weak Carolina pass defense. I think he goes off in that game, and we're not going to match what someone else offers.

I am hoping Derek Carr gets cut by the Raiders or we can trade a pair of 1st for Wentz if the Eagles decide to go with Foles.

I'm not saying Bridgewater is the second coming of Brees but Brees was not the Brees we have come to know now. He had his ups & downs, trials & tribulations with the Chargers.

Plus Bill Parcells thinks highly of Teddy, so much so talking about him got him choked up. Who are we to make judgment when a coach that possesses a gold jacket seems to think Bridgewater has the makings to be more than just a solid QB.

quote:

Parcells was struck by Bridgewater's maturity and winning personality. They stayed in touch over the years, with Parcells checking up on him through Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, one of his coaching proteges. In March, Parcells met Bridgewater for lunch in Jupiter, around the time he signed with the Jets. He believes Bridgewater still has the ability to do special things, if his knee is right.

quote:

Whenever he's asked about his comeback, he credits his mother, Rose Murphy, a breast-cancer survivor.

"Her biggest thing was to stay positive because she said that the cancer feeds off of negativity," Bridgewater said.

"Watching her remain positive through what she went through gave me this positive mindset and never allow any doubt or any negative thoughts to creep in."

Bridgewater's mother is a big part of his life.

"Do you know why? Because she's the boss," Parcells said with a laugh. "Of course, she inspired him."

The old coach paused. You could almost hear a catch in his throat.

"He's the best kid," he said. "The best kid."

It kinda reminds me of the relationship Brees had with Cam Cameron. Cam had all the faith in Brees despite knowing Chargers then GM AJ Smith didn't. He kept telling Brees to continue to fight & get better which is why Brees gives so much credit to Cam Cameron for his development. Parcells has similar faith in Bridgewater.

As far as the OP though, I would roll with Brees until the wheels fall off yet somehow find a way to keep Teddy on board as a security blanket.

Brees is 39, about to be 40 in a couple of weeks.

Also, Brees contract voids at the end of next season. The Saints front office will then have a major decision on their hands.

Well, Drew will not be traded. With his competitive spirit, not sure he will know when it is really time to call it a career. He will want to play as long as he can get a jersey over the pads. I see an older QB, with a tired arm at the end of the season. The bye is a blessing for the team.

Bridgewater has now understudied Drew for a year. A mobile, strong armed QB that has enjoyed success in the league. Doubt he will stay around another year, much less a few years waiting his turn. The guy, understandably, wants to start & will somewhere. Sign & trade is the best deal to try. Would be tough unless we really pony up to pay what is is worth & will demand.

Team has a lot of young talent going forward, so unless we mortgage an entire draft to move up to draft “the” QB somewhere down the road (I don’t see that guy in the college ranks at this point), Bridgewater is the key to staying in the top echelon of this league for any length of time.

Drew will have to be gone by the 2021 season if we want to have any shot at resigning Cam Jordan, Kamara and Lattimore. All three's deals end after 2020 season. Michael Thomas' ends after next season, I expect he gets a huge extension this offseason. I expect Drew's last season is next year so our next QB is able to have the weapons that Drew currently has under rookie contracts. So does Bridgewater wait another year or do we draft one this draft

I think if Brees is healthy then he will have a farewell tour next season, break TD record and forever be cemented as one of the greatest
