We signed him to a large deal but if memory serves, the team could have voided it with a modest buyout or lock in the whole contract after the first year...in case he blew out his shoulder again. We all know what happened.

It was the way he was treated in Miami that pushed drew away from there

I was honestly happy with the pick up. I remember watching him at Purdue and the Chargers. No one ever expected him to play this well, but I think he was definitely a small glimmer of hope at a position where the saints really wanted a solid leader and player.

It is somewhat of a hyperbole, but at the time we drafted Reggie it brought excitement to the city and state. Reggie and Drew are the reason season ticket sales skyrocketed. He may not be playing at the level people thought he would, but Reggie should be given just as much credit as Brees for bringing back excitement to the Saints.

i was worried about his shoulder

so-so arm + shoulder surgery is a worry. i don't care who you are

the fact that the dolphins team doctors said he failed his physical was also a worry

but i thank that incompetent staff everyday. if they gave the green light he's in miami

I don't know the details of his first contract,

it was like 6/60 i think. which is cheap for a good starting QB

i was a huge fan of the signing, but i was worried. to not be worried would be foolish, imho

Winning escalated the excitement, but the excitement was already there before the season.

You are 100% correct with the MNF vs ATL game. I'm sure no Saints fan will ever forget Gleason's blocked punt.

I've been a huge Drew Brees fan since I saw him play Kansas State in a bowl game his freshman year. He was just awesome and that was as a freshman. I hoped we would draft him, and was supprised he didn't go in the first round. A year after AB got his new contract I was hoping the Saints would trade him for Brees since SD wasn't so hot on him and had just gotten P. Rivers.

Needless to say, I love me some Drew Brees. Drew the man!!!

Well, never have I ever been so happy to be so so wrong. The purpose of this thread is, did anybody else feel this way then?

I remember well hearing that New Orleans was on the Brees short list. Here in Dallas, there were murmurs of Cowboys interest, but more along the lines of "he can be Romo's mentor" than long-term starter.

I was thinking "Please let this work out for the Saints for once" - new coach, new offense, new hope... I never thought it was a dumb pick - just risky... I let out a tremendous sigh of relief when he made it through training camp and another after pre-season... By the start of regular season - I knew we had just pulled off our single greatest FA acquisition EVER.

It was more than just their doctors' incompetence...I read an interview with him where he said he felt like Saban and Mueller were "interrogating" him about his shoulder, while the staff in New Orleans were upbeat and told him the team needed a QB like him in the worst way, and didn't make the shoulder the focus of the conversations.

Saban compassion at it's finest (and yes - I do understand football is a business).

It was a gamble, coming off the injury he had. But hey they got assurances from Dr. James Andrews that he would make a full recovery. I was kinda nervous about but with Andrews track record, their was no reason to not believe him.

i'm pretty sure this is just brees making good with the locals

seriously, if he was cleared, he was signing with the dolphins. he came here AFTER they said no

I found out that we committed $60 mill to Brees, I said a prayer. Turns out, we got a bargain.
We could have made him the highest paid player in the NFL and it would have been a bargain.

Drew needs to be a Saint for the rest of his life.
