Who was then?

And they only ranked top 10 in YPC just once and were above average to bad in sack %.

The guy doesn’t have a good track record as an OL coach

Does he get credit for Jahiri, Nicks, Stinch ?

Yea he was abysmal this season. You’d have to go back to the pre-Saban era to find such poor offensive line play at Alabama.

And still featured mediocre to bad rushing attacks. They did well in pass protection. But they also had Brees at QB who was great at avoiding sacks.

No matter how you look at it, he’s not a great OL coach. Probably not even an average one.

It’s pretty easy to misrepresent the value of an OL coach. There is no real quantifiable measure

One spin is they had a top 5 scoring offense in 2 of the 3 seasons he was here, and led the league in total yards twice. Drafted and help develop Jahiri, Nicks, Stinch

Of course the other spin would be he wasn’t good based on the rush totals bc they saints were 5th, 1st and 1st in pass attempts during his tenure. We know Deuce and Reggie were a pretty good 1-2 punch in ‘06. Deuce tore the ACL in ‘07 and wasn’t the same in ‘08. All said it Bush Pierre Deuce were a complimentary trio to a great aerial attack

In conclusion it’s a neutral hire at worst as long as he’s not OC

Considering the Saints continued that for several years after he left, it’s very reasonable to conclude that was because of other people most importantly Brees and SP. Meanwhile Marrone has had mediocre to bad offenses on every other team he has been on in the NFL. The only exception was the 2017 Jags offense. So 13 YEARS in the league as an OL/OC/HC outside the Saints, and only one top 10 season in scoring and total offense. Meanwhile numerous seasons with bottom 10 or even bottom 3 offenses.

So basically his offenses only looked consistently good overall only when he coached with an elite play caller in SP and a 1st ballot HOF QB in Brees.

That’s why I looked at YPC. The Saints were ranked bottom 10 in rushing efficiency metrics in all 3 years. But fine you want to give a ton of credit, just also look at everywhere else he has coached where he didn’t have that caliber of HC and QB. Because that’s what representative of who he is and what he has to work with here.

And his offenses looked bad with EJ Manuel, Kyle Orton, Blake Bortles, Minshew. No real shock. Personnel is king

I’m not giving him a ton of credit Let’s look at it with a wide lens. You appear disgruntled bc you think he let your Tide down. As long as he’s not our OC idc either way about him being on the staff. The personnel will dictate his success

And it’s not like this offense is likely to be tremendously better. Remember no Payton anymore. I’m not saying it will be as bad as those Jets, Bills, and Jags teams but it’s likely closer to them than a top 5 elite’s offense’s personal.

You’re the one fixated on his performance with the Saints. I’m the one looking at his entire career. The guy’s been in the league for a long time and has had more bad than good.

Don’t bring shite in here. I have zero problem separating being a Bama fan and Saints fan. I brought up his Bama stop because that was his most recent one and yet another bad showcase. I’m telling you this guy is not a good OL coach. Just another NFL guy that continues to get hired because of prior experience

No. I responded to you cherry picking the Saints “poor” rushing attack by acknowledging they had arguably the best offense in the league two of the three years he was OC

The totality of his work leans neither negative or positive for me. We have a lot of money and draft capital on the OL and most would say they underachieved last year. We will have an opportunity to judge his work firsthand

It’s possible for the rushing attack to be poor relative to rest of the league while the rest of the offense is great because the passing offense was so good. And like I said, that had to do mostly with Brees and Payton. I say that because they went on to do it several more years after Marrone left while Marrone only did it once more while having plenty of bad years.

I also brought up his other tenures which you paid little attention to.

They went on to do it serval more years. So no credit to Marrone. Fair enough

Didn’t EJ Manuel, Orton, Minshew, Bortles etc go on to do their thing several more years without Marrone? Their thing being career NFL backup QBs. Credit to Marrone?

Once again isn’t that what closer to what the Saints are going to have? Again not saying it’s as bad but it’s not looking great especially without Payton. They’re not going to have an elite play caller or HOF QB.

Basically if he’s with a HOF QB and HC, he can help make the offense look great but when he’s dealing with not the best he struggles. You may say duh! What I’m saying his performances with the 2nd group are more relevant to this current team

I didn’t say that was the personal we have. Just that it’s closer to them than overall elite personal and playcalling. Guys as bad him as will do little (or nothing) to help what could already be a mediocre group.

Again we’ll see what will happen soon enough
