Doesn't look like we're getting a discount on Brees....

At some point in the next year or two, the Saints will make Brees one of the richest players in NFL history. Think $20 million per year. There is no immediate need to get a deal done, because Brees, 31, has two years remaining on his six-year, $60 million contract. But the two sides will at least begin some discussions this summer to see how far apart they are. One way or another, it would be an absolute shock if Brees went into the 2011 season without a new deal -- assuming, of course, that there is a 2011 season.

But he's such a great guy... where's the discount?

Actually there is. You absolutely have to take advantage of the uncapped year with Brees. Pay him enough up front that his cap number when the cap returns is no more than $15 and you can keep enough talent around him to make this a dynasty.

Why the hell would we get a discount?
Loyalty cuts both ways. PAY THE MAN!!

I would pay more than that. Maybe a c-note.

This. What ever Tom Benson paid him last year, he earned back by just the revenue off the two televised, sold out playoff games in the Dome.
Brees doesn't have nearly the endorsement deals that Brady, Manning, and Favre have. It would be complete and utter bullshite not to pay the dude his fair market value. He's a good guy, but he's not gonna take a slap in the face. It's sheer principle- pay the man.

No one said Benson should lowball Brees. He should pay him the $20m a year if that's what he wants. The hope was that Brees would take less money so as to make sure to keep as much of this team together for a while.

Brees will want what he's worth. He'll ask for a contract that will take care of the rest of his career. Benson will give him whatever the frick he wants and all will be right in the Who Dat Nation. The End.

IF the endorsement deals start rolling in like they should, he might.
He seems like potentially a much more compelling dude, media wise, than either Manning or Brady (who both possess the personality of a door knob), but that's just me.

I just don't think it's even fair for people to hope that, because then all the haters start coming out who (for some reason) expect Brees to cut his salary.
This is his last big contract opportunity and I'm sure he'll take full advantage, just as we all would. Guys like Brady and Manning have been the exception, because they've been making more off endorsements than from their salary.

You think he is such a great guy that he's gonna say "I'll just play well under my value b/c I love N.O." ?
While that would be noble of him, I think he deserves to be one of the highest paid players in the NFL.

I think he will be getting these his way very soon......

Yeah, I don't get it, either. After watching Favre's horrendous "acting" in those Sears commercials and Brady's wooden attempts at on-camera personality, I don't understand how an articulate, passionate everyday lunch-pail kinda guy like Brees isn't resonating with the endorsement dollar. Maybe this will change soon now that America has got to know him a little better.

Of course he does, no one will question this, and anyone who does really doesn't know much about the nature of football.
Professional athletes retire much quicker than people in other professions. Let him get paid. The main will be running different organizations and charities for the rest of his life.

Saying this, misses the bigger picture of current NFL team economics, though, which is structuring his contract in such a way as to keep a nucleus of a good team around him to keep doing what they did this year.
Endorsement deals will be a big part of being able to hopefully do that.

Manning the personality of a door knob? No way. Did you see him on SNL? It was great.

Manning didn't give the Colts a discount. He and Freeney are fantastic players worth their cost, but they're going to be limited in what they can do in keeping players. They're fortunate that Wayne and Mathis have really good deals.
And, again, I never said he was obligated to take less money just because woe is us Katrina blah blah. I said if he wants his arse upright (think first 4 games of 2007 season) and the defense to keep getting turnovers, he would be best to sacrifice some money. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would really feel the difference between $90m over 6 years vs. $120m over 6 years, especially if it means winning more games and raising your chances of going down as the best QB in history (keep up these numbers +2 more SB wins and I think he would be).

I would agree that he has the on-field personality of a doorknob (which is probably not a bad thing anyway imo), but off the field he's absolutely hilarious.

We have gotten a discount the last 4 years. There is no reason to not pay him what he deserves. He has been one of the top 3-4 QBs since he has been a Saint.

1. Why would he take a discount?
2. Why would the Saints ask him to?
His original 6 year/$60 million deal WAS the discount.
