37 sacks will take a toll on a person....even if he is a superman like Drew is.

Yes.

However, it wasn't obnoxious to expect a deeper playoff push. Especially with the way the first half of the season went. I still think with a few bounces going their way, the Saints could have shocked the world and beat Seattle in Seattle.

Without a doubt it was a success anytime you make the playoffs it's a successful season especially after you missed the playoffs the year before.

bust, payton coming back was supposed to be a revenge tour

two plus seasons of drew blowing smoke about how motivated they are because of bounty gate.

it really was a failure because like 11 it should have been more

NE, CAR...win one of those and we're the 2 seed. The same losing decision in NE cost us in CAR, costing us the division, the 2 seed, the reasonable shot at a title. a wildcard birth and getting soundly beaten in the divisional when you should be at home coming off a bye is a failure.

Success for the defense.

As a whole, it was a good season. Had a legit shot at the #2 seed (and #1 seed at one point), but were extremely unsuccessful on the road to close out the year and solidify that #2 seed.

Also got the "Can't win a road playoff game" monkey off our back. Although, we also need to figure out why our level of play took a nose dive on the road the 2nd half of the year.

If comparison to my pre-season expectations: success

Coming off a historically bad defensive performance, I thought 10-6 with one playoff victory was the most we could hope for.

If comparison to my mid-season expectations: meh, bust(ish)

this team should have never lost som many games down the stretch. Answer the bell in any one of those late losses and we may still be playing ball.

You only get so many chances, you need to take full advantage of the chances that you get.

Success? Yes, bigtime. The Saints did way better than any preseason expectations. We were coming off a 7-9 season with an awful defense. We added Rob Ryan to fix the defense, but that was supposed to highlight Victor Butler, who was injured almost immediately. Drafting Vaccaro instead of Jarvis Jones was another gripe. I think everyone expected our defense to be pretty bad, if for no other reason than the personnel was so questionable.

They FAR exceeded any rational expectations on defense.

The offense was about as expected, going in. For my part, I even predicted Robinson's emergence; not him in particular (by name), but I did figure we'd find another undrafted RB who would be competent and productive. Maybe we've been spoiled by PT, Ivory, and Cadet, but it just seems like this front office does a good job of finding backs who can play.

2 things which surprised me on offense- Kenny Stills and the O-Line. Stills as a 5th rd pick was the second best WR we've drafted, behind Colston. He stepped in early (as compared to Henderson and Meachem, for example), has big-play potential and good hands. He will be a good player in this offense. The other surprise, honestly, was how well the line played; that might sound funny, but I felt Brown and the others did a lot better than I was afraid of. Brees got hit a good bit and we couldn't run well, but it wasn't the total disaster I thought it might be.

edit to add: the only disappointment I have is not winning the division, after having a 3 game lead mid-season. But that's something that developed during the season; in the preseason I would have gladly took 11-5 and a wildcard.

Yes. It was a success. 11-5 and a WC win on the road and advance to the divisional round.

I have been a hard core Saints fan since 1981 when I first understood what was going on and Bum Phillips came in. My dad and grandpa has season tickets for the first season. I have suffered a lot over the years.

This was a good year and anyone who says it wasn't doesn't know what they are talking about. Yes, you want to win it all, but you can't be miserable if you don't.

Absolutely.

Defensive turnaround really nothing else to say there that hasn't already been said

Road playoff win

And it looks like we just might have a legit running game headed in to next season.

After 7-9 and the worst defense in NFL history.

This season was a smashing success.

I do. We were in total disarray last year. We were basically nine points away from having Seattle come to our place.

I'm disappointed, but this team probably over achieved.

This season was absolutely a success. Did you wake up every Sunday morning excited that the saints game was in a couple hours?

You can't ask for anything more from your team than the excitement they bring to you each time they step on the field.

I'd say being at least the 3rd best team in the NFC was pretty successful. And we beat one of the top two (SF) and came pretty darn close against #1 on the road.
We also beat Philadelphia for our first road playoff win.

Success for me is how you perceive the overall direction of the franchise. 7-9 to 12 wins and in the Final 8 is nothing but positive. The defensive turnaround from the worst in history to elite was spectacular. Get the offense back to the high octane we are used to and solidify the STs and you are the brink of not just good but dominant.

Big success, especially in comparison to last year. The defense was a huge surprise.

However, I do think the back half of the season was a historical choke on the Saints' part. The 2 seed was all but locked-up and we let it slip away.

I think the team will learn a huge lesson from this season and carry momentum into next year, especially with the quality rookie play we saw this year.

7-9 to 12 wins

This isn't your normal turn around though. Had Payton been here last year, we hit double digit wins and are in the playoffs. That 7-9 record is a fluke because of extenuating circumstances that pretty much have never happened to a franchise before.

I get your point, but I personally couldn't factor that blip of a season last year as legit, especially comparing it to this year.
