Marcus Davenport has been sidelined for more practices than he has participated in this training camp.

Monday’s session marked the sixth session he has missed due to what a source called a minor muscle pull. Any missed time could be viewed as cause for concern for a rookie player, but the team does not view it as a dire situation because of how Davenport conducts himself in meetings.

“It’s the mental part where I’m impressed with the guy,” defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen said. “He’s in the meetings early and he’s studying. When you have that – and I think our group has that. I think our group is a smart group of guys in terms of football IQ, and Marcus fits in that group.

“When you’re in the meetings and you’re watching, obviously you want to have to do the reps, but he’s listening and he’s learning the terminology and how we’re pass rushing and doing things. You’ll see when he comes back from this little injury here he’ll take the next step too.”

The Saints sent their first-round picks this year and next year to move up and select Davenport in the first round. He is considered to be a raw prospect with a high amount of upside. New Orleans is hoping that he can contribute this season and eventually blossom into a force rushing opposite Cam Jordan.

As much as we want to see him, I'd rather him sit out all of the preseason if it will get him ready for week 1

He needs to see the field in the preseason. Film study will only get you so far, have to apply it. I'm all for them being patient, but he needs to get his feet wet before Tampa.

What you see is what I see. They didn't specify, other than it's minor and really no cause for concern.

The young guy needs reps in live action though. If we're talking about a seasoned vet like Alex Okafor who is coming off of injury then sitting him makes sense. Okafor, without a doubt, knows what's going on out there.

Hendrickson isn't a bad temporary fall back option and the bright side is that the team will get a more in depth look at Muhammad which I am ok with due to how he played in last years preseason.

As long as it is a minor injury, I wasn't expecting big things until the midseason from Davenport at the earliest TBH anyway.

No worries as long as we stay healthy.

Sitting out most of training camp worked out pretty well for Lattimore.

Yeah I totally get that.... but what good will it do us if he rushes back and then has a major issue with the same muscle in week 4? How does that help?

Still pisses me off that we wasted 2 firsts on this guy. For what we paid for him, he better be an all-pro.

Lingering injuries is not a good way to start your NFL career.

Yea he needs to see he field.. but does he Need to risk furthering his injury. I’d rather him be 100% healthy in game 1,2,3 instead of trying to get preseason work and having an injury linger all season

So Kikaha will play the first three to four games then get hurt and put on IR and then Davenport will be 100%. Gotcha!

I assume this is a troll post, but if not, the Saints did not waste "2 firsts" on this guy. They made the same amount of picks in the first round that they would have made without the trade...ONE. The only difference is that they paid a 5th and NEXT YEAR'S first to make their 2018 1st round selection at #14 instead of #27.

Early injuries are always a concern, but I don't think the Saints are expecting Davenport to be an every down DE at this point in his career. They are looking for a pass-rush specialist to play probably a limited number of rotational snaps while guys like Okafor and Hendrickson also get PT.

I suspect they are looking for Davenport to get 25-30 snaps per game in an effort to maximize his pass rushing ability for 4 quarters and not allow him to get worn down by playing a ton of defensive snaps. His time as a full time starter will come. If in his 25-30 snaps he can get you a sack and a couple of QB hurries ALL while taking some of the focus away from Jordan, I think the Saints would be very happy.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about Muhammed? I haven't seen anything about him in the TC updates.
