Lmfao if this doesn't confirm Payton's absolute stupidity when it come to the draft, even to the idiot fans who swallowed that shite sandwich of a draft this year and convinced themselves it was good, nothing will.
Opps
What this tread confirms is the stupidity of fans, if this doesn’t convince them to not make such sweeping proclamations nothing will

Unfortunately these kinds of takes will continue. Just look at this board since Payton stepped down. I ran across a thread concerning Reuben Foster for this same 2017 draft & it was a doozy.
Foster thread

obviously the people who just trashed Mahomes ended up being just wrong (see: the poster who said Mahomes won't be in the league in 3 years)
but on the organization... it's not like we had Mahomes waiting to be drafted when we picked.. nor did our #1 pick flop
Mahomes was off the board and Lattimore has turned into perennial top line CB
we did fine

With Foster he had off the field issues, I don’t know if there were red flags in college or not but that stuff is hard to predict. But to write off an entire class the last day come on
Maybe it’s a product of getting older but I try to not make such sweeping declarations. I did like Mahomes, but I was a little perplexed when Josh Allen was projected so high because his college stats were mediocre against mediocre competition but try not to say stuff like hes shite and he’ll be out of the league in 3 years because no one has any idea, it’s an inexact science and there a billion variables that determine whether a guy is good great of awful

We did fine but that still kind of sucks when the alternative is the best QB in the league

More than sucks.
Obviously a horrible decision not to move up to get the best QB in the league
Sean Payton would not have quit with Mahommes as our QB

I mean... yeah it sucks... but we got jumped and he got taken
we still hit on a damn good player with our own pick... 1 who helped us get 1 uncalled DPI penalty away from a Super Bowl

Go back & watch the video of Payton from the OP in it's entirety. My thought process here is piecing together Payton's words from that interview & others he did around that time.
In that video though, Payton discussed that they had thought about moving up several times in the early rounds of the draft. Could they have made offers to move up with other teams? I think they definitely put out feelers.
There's another video out there after one of these drafts where Payton talked about Ireland’s influence when he arrived & how he encouraged Payton & Loomis to stay put & not trade up as often as they did in the past. That's important in this Mahomes situation because it made no sense to move up when the guy you want is falling to you & appeared like he was going to be there at #11. So why waste draft capital for no reason?
The other thing is Buffalo needed a corner BADLY so the Bills were going to take Lattimore leaving Mahomes there at #11. People keep forgetting that Buffalo & KC swapped spots in that 2017 first round & were able to get a great value of Tre White at #27 along with the extra picks from KC. Had KC not made the call to the Bills, Buffalo takes Lattimore & the Saints take Mahomes just like the organization felt like it was playing out on the board. KC threw a monkey wrench into the entire thing though.

There were red flags everywhere concerning Foster. I listed a lot of them back at that time on here. Some people just didn't want to hear them at the time. It was character & injury concerns for the most part. Both reasons why he failed in the NFL. I have a few more threads about Foster because he was such a hot topic prospect for that draft.

It's because of Allen's physical gifts. The size, mobility & arm strength was there. The question marks were small school competition at Wyoming & below average completion percentage.
Malik Willis is going to be the Josh Allen prospect of this draft. Lots of physical talent. Big arm, decent size & elusive mobility with elite speed but he's from a small school with a below average completion percentage history so his accuracy along with being able to learn NFL passing concepts will be his biggest question mark.

I get it that Allen has the measurables but we’ve seen plenty of guys strong arms and good mobility fail out of the league. I’m saying no one can really tell so a bunch of fans say he sucks and will fail are just full of shite, just wait and see
Another thing people overlook is the situation and coaching. Does Mahomes become the star he is if he’s picked by the Bears? We can never know for sure but I think Reid and his offense are a big part of it. (Of course he’d been fine in Payton’s offense)

When it comes to trying to pinpoint college QBs who have the potential to good to great NFL QBs too often both fans & organizations get caught in the physical gifts or numbers that a QB put up in college. There are characteristics from a psychological, comprehension & leadership standpoint that HAS to be evaluated because the QB position in the NFL is like no other position in all of team sport. This is where the most mistakes are made.

Coaching is absolutely a huge part of the success or failure part in a QBs development or lack there of. Everyone always places the blame on the player himself when he doesn't pan out. Sometimes that is indeed the case but other times coaching & organizational dysfunction places a huge factor as well.
Mahomes checks off other boxes outside of just his physical talents alone. Some QBs can just rise about the shitfest they walk into & become great. They help lead the change in culture. Yes he had help but we saw this first hand with Drew Brees & we currently watching it unfold with Joe Burrow in Cincinnati. I think Mahomes possesses those same intangibles & would have been a winner even in a place like Chicago.
