Meanwhile all of these teams that are bidding don’t want to risk the chance of having him go somewhere else, so they are trying to make the most attractive package to the saints as possible.
It’s not a “ok, our offer isn’t great to the saints so we can just wait till next year” it’s a “shite if we don’t make the best package for the saints, he’s going somewhere else now”
Its not possible to have a trade package bidding war if the person in the trade couldn't care less about who offers the best deal.
And he's "boo hoo'd" and "best friended" Mickey enough through the media since he quit on him that he's got Mickey even saying he won't stop him from coaching next year, if Payton wants to.

WTF is this?

Assuming they are the team chosen.
They aren’t bidding against the other teams.
Of course they’re bidding against each other. Obviously not the way you think
Every new team that enters the chat, with a higher 1RD pick or an excess of draft capital, allows us to leverage the next team just a little more. And ultimately it may not be CSP’s choice, but at this point that does not matter. Establish the best package possible and let the chips fall where they may.

Perfectly said. It’s not a bidding war. Now I do think there will be general guidelines agreed to regarding compensation. Maybe based off of the draft pick value points charts or something like that. But I think they’ll be some leeway given.

Oh I love debate. Please.
Even if Sean waits 5 years the Saints will still be owed compensation ala Mike Holmgren.

Bidding teams don’t know that. But they do know there are multiple teams out there trying to get him NOW with the idea of, “shite if we don’t get him now, another team will” so more teams = equal higher bids.
If there was only one team in the running, they could just wait and say “ok we will get him when he can walk”

In which case we would get a 7th at best.
Trade this quitter now and get max value. Ready for him to fall on his face without a HOF QB on his side.

It would go to arbitration. Saints would argue they were owed 3 years of Sean’s services before he “retired.” It’s a pointless exercise considering he will get traded soon.

At some point they will have to meet. The saints have the best leverage

You have to think the asking price is totally outrageous, but if they are interviewing it’s agreed to
It’s more likely the asking price is low to reasonable, after all every team that has asked has moved forward with interviewing Payton.

Not at all. Because this only benefits the first team to enter the fold. The Saints can’t go back and say “we have better offers now up it” if they’ve already agreed to compensation.
The bids are all made independent of each other.
The only package the teams have to make the BEST is the one do Payton. Not the saints.

The decision is Payton's to make. So teams aren't bidding against each other's trade offers. They're bidding against each other's contract offers.
What are you talking about? Just like the the Watson situation, we don’t allow them to talk to Payton unless parameters of compensation is agreed upon first. They can’t ‘talk’ to him unless we allow it first. He decides where he wants to go but the compensation shoujd be decided upon before hand.

And again they aren’t bidding against each other. They make an offer independent of what other teams are offering.

If Carolina wants to talk to him, they will have to give up double what other teams give. If they balk, we decline to let them talk. Simple as that.

Obviously some teams will have to pay more because of who they are. Carolina would need to pay the most.
Then Arizona being an NFC team.
