Schefty:
You have to think the asking price is totally outrageous, but if they are interviewing it’s agreed to

Sources: The Carolina Panthers are the latest entrant into the Sean Payton Sweepstakes, receiving permission today to interview the former head coach of their NFC South rival. Carolina, Arizona, Denver and Houston are now all interested in hiring Payton.

Some of the NFL’s highest-profile coaching deals - Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick - also involved division rivals. If the Panthers were able to hire Payton, he would be the newest entrant to join the list of coaches making an intra-division jump to spice up a rivalry.

Three firsts and three seconds

At least. If he’s going to a division rival I’d say it’s at least double what, say, the Chargers would need to pay.

Would Panthers be stupid enough to give up 4 1st rounders. They offered 3 1st’s and more picks for Deshaun. Super Bowl coach should be worth more.

CSP doing us a favor and going to tank the Panthers for us

I'm as big a homer as anyone else, but if this is really the type of compensation fans are expecting, Mickey Loomis better spend the offseason in a bunker.
Ultimately, all this does is run up Payton's bank account. He's now got, by a wide margin, the two richest owners in the league opening their checkbooks.
The decision is Payton's to make. So teams aren't bidding against each other's trade offers. They're bidding against each other's contract offers.
Its a brilliant financial move for Payton.

Huh. It is.
How many teams are in on him is irrelevant to us.
He chooses the team. It’s up to us to try and get max compensation from that 1 team.
It’s not 6 teams bidding against each other.

Stupid. As long as Payton is granting interviews to multiple teams, it matters
You think the compensation is the same if only one team wanted Payton? No. Regardless if he’s “choosing” his next stop, it still matters

3 firsts and 3 seconds and they have to take Peat off our hands!!!!!??

If they give up too much draft capital, they'll guarantee high picks. It'll be like the Herschel Walker trads.
They don't have great players they could trade to replenish the picks.

I’m with Sandy. Having multiple teams interested definitely matters to Payton & negotiating a new contract.
As for the Saints, this is kind of uncharted waters. To basically have a coach go through a public courtship like this.
I do think there is a possibility where Payton feels comfortable going to two teams, and it could be up to the Saints to decide based on compensation.
Payton has most of the leverage but I don’t think the Saints are sitting completely idle either.

Or we can just say “frick you” we don’t want you going to that team

We could. The leverage doesn’t change.
Then the team and Payton both say “ok” and CSP waits until next year when we have even less leverage.

It only matters to Payton and how much money he can get.

It IS only one team. The team he chooses.
This isn’t hard. This is basic stuff.

Oh well. If someone doesnt want to pay according to past deals then they can wait two years.

Wut lol
If he is fine going to one of two teams in the bidding, and the saints prefer one team over the other, then yes the leverage the saints have definitely changes in their favor.

But of course that isn’t what’s going to happen.
He’s going to choose to go with 1 team. And that’s it. We “can’t” trade him to a team he doesn’t want to go to. (We can but they would just acquire his rights he doesn’t have to coach for them).
This is not much different than the AD to the Lakers situation. But the Lakers were desperate and David Griffin anally raped them. Let’s hope Loomis can do the same to whatever team Payton chooses.
Why is this so hard for people to understand
