No. He’s going to bid all of the teams against each other for his contract and then choose 1.
And then tell the Saints, “I would like to go to _____”
The Saints can stop it if they don’t get the deal they want and that’s the only leverage they have. That’s good leverage.
But it’s not 5 teams bidding against each other leverage.

It’s totally different because of the way contracts work in terms of player vs coach lol.
The incentive to trade him is nil because it does not affect the performance of the team in anyway.
This will be much more of an alignment & agreement between 3 parties all looking to mutually benefit

Except the two teams are agreeing on a general compensation before interviews. Payton chooses who he wants to talk to. It is pretty basic stuff. There is no bargaining power without the interest from the teams

Yes it is because these teams are all blindly talking over compensation with the saints RIGHT NOW.
If the panthers offer him the highest contract, he’s not going to tell them, “ok you offered me the most money, let’s stop there.” They are going to be in the dark about where they stand.
Meanwhile all of these teams that are bidding don’t want to risk the chance of having him go somewhere else, so they are trying to make the most attractive package to the saints as possible.
It’s not a “ok, our offer isn’t great to the saints so we can just wait till next year” it’s a “shite if we don’t make the best package for the saints, he’s going somewhere else now”

He won’t be available to the losing teams next year when he signs with someone this year. Those teams that want him bad are factoring that into his decision. Therefore, more teams, equal more chances that you miss out on him if you have a weak package. So yes, more teams def means better packages.

He’s choosing the team. The thing is he could find more than one suitable.
This would benefit him too, if the Saints are being harball’d by one of the clubs. “Sorry Sean we can’t trade you there. The compensation isn’t enough.”

This all a money play for him. He's got Tepper bidding against Walmart money, even if he has no plans on going to Carolina.
Like everyone with common sense has always said, Payton will pick the team that we'll have to negotiate with, and Mickey will have to extract the most compensation he can out of a situation where all 3 sides(Payton, Saints, other team) know full well Payton's made up his mind to coach again.
Some other team jumping in to offer 5 first round picks is meaningless if thats not where Payton wants to spend his 60s. In fact, for an older coach, at team offering wild compensation might actually work against him wanting to go there.
