This is really what you are looking at. In short, what makes a pyramid scheme illegal is the fact that the money generated is from the signing up of new members and not the actual sale of the product itself. Advocare is a legit product that hundreds of thousands of people have tried. This is a stretch to say this is any different than Mary Kay(which is legitimate), but I don't claim to know all of the inner workings of their business model.:

Because pyramid schemes rely on recruitment of new members to bring in money, the schemes often collapse when the pool of potential recruits dries up (market saturation). When the plan collapses, most people, except the few at the top of the pyramid, lose their money."
