I don't post much on here, but lately I've been reading way too many people bashing Drew and specifically his arm strength. I agree, he isn't slinging it as far or as effortlessly as he used to, but he is still throwing some dimes out there. I'm not sure if it's the play calling or personnel, but I've seen enough to know that if Drew has to throw a 40+ yard pass, he can drop it on a dime.

Brees passing it 42 yards to Cook.
At the 2 minute mark

I watched his highlights for the first few weeks of this season and his passes looked to have decent velocity and the accuracy was on point. Now I do remember some of his passes being off a good bit and I'm not sure what was going on, but that was just a few and some of the passes he made right on the money was dropped by the receiver.

All I'm trying to say is Drew is not the problem. We are missing some key players and some others are not performing at the level that we are expecting them to play at. Give the team some time to gel and work some kinks out. Sanders is still learning the offense and Thomas is still out. I expect this team to turn it around and make a push for the playoffs. WHO DAT!?

Drew Brees stats through 3 games

When he cocks back and slings one to Harris on a 40 yard go then I’ll believe he may still have an arm. Until then he will keep double clutching, looking unsure in the pocket, and dumping off to AK41.

having a QB that refuses to even look past 10 yards down the field unless a coverage is completely busted like week 1 is a problem.

No one is "taking away the deep stuff" like Payton and Brees are claiming, he's just not throwing it cuz either he can't or he doesn't believe he can which basically means he cant.

Do you think that the ravens weren't trying to take away the deep stuff on Mahomes? Do you think defenses didnt try to take away the deep stuff for the first 10 years brees was in Nola?

Our QB is washed and the only way to win with him is to have the D play at 2015 Denver Broncos level.

Define better than most...because if you list out QBs who are playing better than him this year, he doesn't fall in the top 10.

QBs who are playing better this year include (in no order):

Dak
Jackson
Allen
Wilson
Mahomes
Rodgers
Watson
Murray
Brady
Cam
Ryan

I watched that link, and Brees did put the ball 40 yds downfield. Wasn't a floater, wasn't on a rope either.

He had to cock and double pump, I wonder if he had to put something into it to throw it that far, or if he just isn't sure.

Not sure what the problem is; maybe it's not knowing the receiver. Like I said, it's not on a rope, he has to time it to complete it.

I think he can probably throw it farther this year than last with the arm workouts he did.

But there's a big * with that. He can throw it farther when he has a clean pocket and enough time to wind up and put his body into it. That's not happening so far.

Conversely, guys like Rodgers and Mahomes can just flick it 50 yards with ease.

Did anybody stop and think that maybe we dont have receivers that can get separation down field? Yeah, Harris is fast, but he's too short to compete for a jump ball. Smith is slow for a WR and Sanders admits he doesn't know the playbook. We don't have the speed and size at WR like the Chiefs and Ravens. Yes, this is my first post, so let me have it.

Rodgers and Mahomes have had that ability to sling the ball downfield with ease. They always have. They can throw on the run and still throw it with a high velocity. Brees doesn't have that same ability. He is known more for his accuracy.

They can sling it downfield because they have receivers that can catch it. Trequan Smith deep receptions come from blown coverages. The saints are a running team and CSP wont accept that.

not buying. probably 1/3 of his yards are broken tackles by kamara on check downs. shoulda called it quits two seasons ago, stayed just long enough to ruin his reputation and legacy

You are entirely correct, but he is padding stats and worrying about "muh records". If Brady would've retired, Brees wouldn't be under center this season.

Can Sanders throw the ball down the seam to himself?

Seth Galina of Pro Football Focus highlighted this play, calling it “the best seam-thrower of all time passing up one of the most open seam throws of his life.”

Those ratings put a high emphasis on completion %. Of course it’ll benefit the QB throwing the highest amount of shortest passes in the entire league.

Pro Football Focus has tracked quarterbacks’ deep passes (defined as passes thrown to targets more than 20 yards downfield) since 2006. That year, Brees led the league in passing yards and touchdowns on deep throws, going 32 for 58 with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. He’d go on to lead the league in deep throw passing yards four more times (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012), completions on deep throws four times (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012) and touchdowns on deep throws seven times, including six straight years from 2008 to 2013. For his career, 10.8 percent of Brees’s throws have been to targets deeper than 20 yards downfield. Last year, that fell to 8.2 percent, the lowest mark of his career and second-lowest among starting quarterbacks. (Only Jimmy Garoppolo was lower.) This year, only three of Brees’s 68 attempts have been deeper than 20 yards, a rate of 4.4 percent. He has just one completion. (So does Taysom Hill.)

quote:

In that August story about Brees’s offseason program, ESPN looked back at the QB’s career attempts to targets deeper than 35 yards downfield. They found that, from 2014 to 2017, he averaged about six completions on these throws every year. In 2017, he was 7-for-15 on such throws. In 2018, he went 1-for-8. Last year, he was 0-for-5 with an interception.
