We need Dallas to fire McCarthy. That would really get this bidding going.

I’d bet Houston goes with Demeco Ryans

A Bucs win this weekend probably does it.

that doesn't help them circumvent the salary cap and being tied to a washed russell wilson

There have been reports out there that he doesn't want the job. I doubt he would pass if offered but who knows

The amount of very obvious purely Rooney Rule interviews going on right now is pretty damn comical. Raheem Morris is getting multiple HC interviews.

Probably a dumb question, but can a team negotiate and trade for the rights for Sean Payton prior to firing thier head coach? Cowboys, Chargers, and Dolphins particularly come to mind as a couple of teams who may not want to fire thier head coach unless they were guaranteed Payton

i'd guess not really in official capacities but i'm sure there is unofficial means of finding out how much mutual interest there could be and what sort of compensation is expected for you to proceed.

They run the risk of it getting leaked, but sure. Back channel discussions happen all of the time. They would obviously want to keep it at the highest level, GM to GM and no one else involved.
they also, I assume, would want assurances that Payton would choose them before firing their coach, because they would need to do sham Rooney Rule interviews first.

And a Jaguars win likely opens up the Chargers job as well. Should be a full fledged bidding war.

Yep.
Maybe this is Payton's end game? Go to the highest bidder to let the Saints accrue draft picks, coach at that location for a bit, and then come back home to reap the rewards.

What is the precedent for teams firing coaches off of the playoffs?
I know it’s probably happened but my inclination is that it’s wishful thinking

It happens a fair amount.
shite, the Chargers back in the day fired Marty Schott and he had a 14 win season

Bunch that was 2 decades ago

under normal circumstances they probably wouldn't...but you're probably not getting another shot to pair your stud QB with Payton. You pull that trigger if you get a wink wink deal done
Posted on 1/10/23 at 1:33 pm to BilJ
I also think CSP wouldn't want to be associated with a team doing sham Rooney Rule interviews after the Dolphins debacle, so he will probably not promise anything until a team doesn't have a HC

Marty Shottenheimer was fired after a 14-2 season. Thinking the Cowboys will fire McCarthy if they lose to TB seems almost obvious. Staley is getting hammered for playing his starters in a meaningless game and Ekeler gets banged up and Williams is out due to an injury suffered in that game. I’d bet money Staley is fired if they lose to Jax. Tony Dungy was fired after taking the Bucs to a playoff spot (his 4th in 5 seasons) and hired Gruden after trading for his rights and giving up two #1s and two #2s to the Raiders (seems topical wouldn’t you think Lester). Mike Mularkey was also fired after a playoff season with Tennessee. Same with Lovie Smith who went 10-6 with the Bears.
