Baldy's narration is so classic.
not John Facenda NFL Films classic
but classic in dropping knowledge on X in less than 2 minutes classic

Whenever I hear of undrafted free agent defensive ends, I don’t know why but belt swinging junior Gillette always comes to mind

My dream scenario is that all (4) of C Miller/ Broughton/ Z Harris/ K Silver are beasts along with the duo Tyree W and M Heldman.
Which means we could trade Godchaux/ Shepherd for $11mil cap space asap, make plans to move on from Granderson, and have leverage against a Bresee contract coupled with a backup plan if he ends up mediocre.
Godchaux/ Shepherd are mid expiring player that won't be here next year, we got these dudes to replace them anyway. Bresee/ Granderson have 1 more year but if they suck then we will be looking to trade them mid season or during the off season.
Its a serious threat of "Chase Young is the only player safe".

Dont forget Cam Jordan coming back. If he bags another 10 Sacks, this year and Chase does 10 Sacks, then the rest of the team hopefully will get 20 sacks. This team might start looking frosty.
Edit.
Hopefully the team gets more than 50 Sacks this year.
Sorry.

Would we stand him up like Chase Young? At 260, he seems a bit light to have hs hand in the dirt in a 3-4.

If all it takes is 40 sacks for the “team to look frosty”; then I guess they’re already there. The finished last season tied for 10th overall with 45 sacks

Does anyone actually think Godchaux, Shepherd, Bresee, and Granderson are safe on our roster? Starting the season? Maybe. Finishing the season? None of them are safe IMO.
We drafted Broughton/ C Miller to replace Godchaux/ Shepherd. We have been trying to replace Granderson with several people this offseason. We are already overpaying Bresee with the chsnce it plays out but will cut ties asap if he sucks.
Even if you keep Shepherd ahead of Broughton you have the (3) C Miller/ Ridgeway/ Z Harris who make Godchaux irrelevant and immediately moveable.
"Based on performance data from the 2025 season, John Ridgeway was arguably more effective in a limited role for the New Orleans Saints' run defense, while Davon Godchaux provided more consistent availability and total volume as a starter".
Ridgeway could be the better option than Godchaux this year anyway.

Bresee and Grandison seem fairly safe this year.

So how did this dude go undrafted?

You do realize we actively tried to replace Granderson with both of Thibodeaux/ Chaisson right now? And then got Tyree Wilson in the hope that he ends up better than Granderson. None of those dudes are a washed 3rd string Cam replacement. All those dudes were targeted to start across from Chase Young and move on from Granderson.
We have $35mil invested in Granderson/ Bresee for 27' and they are worth maybe $20mil combined at the moment. Neither one of them are getting paid that total if they don't produce. We restructured Granderosn purposely to carry future dead money which almost guarantees he's going to be moved.
Bresee is not safe at all. We extended him in the hope that he breaks out. If he doesn't improve then he's more likely to be traded this year than next year.
There's absolutely no reason to believe that Granderson/ Bresee/ Shepherd/ Gotchaux are better than Broughton/ Z Harris/ C Miller/ T Wilson. And that's strictly based off those 4 dudes simply not being that good. Lets just forget that we had the worst DL in the league until Chase Young came back.

Breese, Granderson and Godchaux are safe. We picked up the 5th year option on him. Could have just declined it.
If Cam doesn’t come back, Wilson is the only legit backup. And he’s on a one year deal. No guarantee he will be back next year. So who will start if Granderson is not on the roster ?
Rookie DTs rarely make an impact. They going against grown men now.

I think all defensive lineman are on notice. I think the only defensive lineman that are “safe” this year are Chase Young, Bryan Bresee, and Christen Miller.
I think Davon Godchaux, Nathan Sheppard and Carl Granderson have a leg up on making the team, but with all the players we brought in I think it’s a clear message that this unit needs a major upgrade and they will keep whoever rises to the top.

In what world does this mean they are safe? We picked up the option so we can trade him for value > losing him for nothing. Picking up an option is different than giving someone a 3-4 year extension.
If they do not take the next step this year they are both gone. Shepherd is safer than Godchaux IMO.
We didn't have another DT to outplay Shepherd meanwhile Ridgeway kinda did outplay Godchaux at NT and then we added a 2nd rd pick + projected 4th in Z Harris.
Ridgeway could start > Godchaux right now and we would be fine, might even be an improvement. We now have 2-3 more guys that can also end up better than Godchaux at NT.
But yeah we drafted a 2nd + 3rd rd DL in b2b years, traded for an ex 1st rd pick, and tried to add (2) starting DL all because those dudes are completely safe and playing great... Its clear they are hopeful but don't trust either of Bresee/ Granderson.

Godchaux had a down yr.
They obviously want to get younger there with Miller. It seems they still believe enough in breesee.
I believe godchaux can get just post June 1st and his dead hit goes way down by 4 or 5 mill.
His cap number is around 7 this yr. This is the last yr of his deal wire 2 dummy yrs tacked on.
