Are the Saints really that far away from contending?

Too much talk on here of blowing up the roster and tanking. With a great defense in place. It seems like a few good moves could put us right back in it:

1. Sign Derek Carr after he gets cut, I trust Khai to spread out his cap it. Whatever you think of him, he'd arguably be a top 3 QB in the NFC and certainly the best in our division. Crazy how all the great QBs are AFC.
2. Draft Bijan Robinson in the 1st or Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2nd - instant spark to offense and eventual replacement for AK.
3. Use the other 1-2 rd pick probably on a DT or maybe an OG that can plug and play.
4. Pick up another WR as FA or get lucky in rd 3 or 4.
5. Have some MFers stay healthy for once
6. Profit.

INB4 coaches suck. Yeah, I know. Gotta make a leap of faith somewhere.

I would say a OC and QB away from contending in a bad division.

I can see it both ways.

The driver to compete now is how terrible the NFC South is and NFC overall. There is a path to win the division now and even win the NFC with some luck.

There is the opposite side, which as you said, don't mention coaching, etc., that we could build for the long-term.

I know it's a simple thought, but last thing I want for us is that middle road 7-10, 8-9, 9-8 type team for years. That gets us nowhere and frustrating.

As of now, our entire D line is hitting free agency so our strong defense staying intact is a big assumption.

No, but the sky screamers here will have you believe we're on par with Chicago and Houston, if not worse.

Honestly it always comes down to the health of the team. I find it hard to believe we don’t get to 10 wins if Lattimore doesn’t miss two months, our 1st round OL missed three months, Kamara missed games again, & IRon Mike Thomas wasn’t a constant pussy. Even with Andy at QB.

If what you mentioned happens and miraculously we can have a semblance of toughness health-wise we can be kings of this terrible division for next 3-5 years

This is no sure thing from season to season especially when your 2 best guys are going to be 34 at the start of the season. We were below average against the run and couldn't force turnovers consistently all year.

I am so over this Derek Carr bullshite. Guy is a fricking bum in the grand scheme of things who no franchise will ever win anything with. The same people who were circlejerking over Jameis are now doing the same over Derek Carr and it's absolutely hilarious. I'm even starting to hope the Saints sign him so I can troll the frick out of the people on this board when he's not really an improvement over Dalton.

This is debatable, and there are few NFL experts that wouldn't consider him a dramatic upgrade over Dalton. Brees wasn't Brees until he came to the Saints. Same thing with Tannehill to the Titans. Sometimes QBs get better with different scenery. A small jump from Carr would put him in Top 10 QB range (which he's flirted with in the past). That's just more likely than us winning the lotto on draft night this year or next.

Yes. To compete against really good teams we're a long way away.

I wouldn't say our defense is great. They're solid. Teams knew they didn't have to take a ton of chances to beat us due to our offensive ineptitude and turnovers. I truly think that helped our statistical rankings.

HC and QB away

Good luck in finding both with this organization

Brees got better because he had a hungry, competent coach scheming up his offense. Carmichael lacks the ability to put our players in position to play to their strengths and mold an effective game plan that does the simplest of things like motion players or make Karmara a weapon again with our once dominant screen game. No matter who is behind center, if Carmichael is the brains behind the operation, we are at an immediate disadvantage.

The other thing is how often do you see a consistently .500 or slightly below team improve upon that before bottoming out a bit first(especially if they don’t have a good qb or coach). It’s not likely. We’re likely going to have to regress record wise to improve at HC and QB now or drag out mediocrity for a few years then bottom out.

Yes. It is an average team that is descending. It will take a couple of bad years before the pendulum shifts.

The Saints can win the division easily. But I don’t think we are equipped to do much in the playoffs.

He may not be elite but to act like he is Winston is absurd. Dude has probably rated as a top 10 QB for the past couple of years.
