I don't see this as a bad thing. The line is horrible. Davenport had more ejections than sacks last year. Payton turner could be traded for a ham sandwich imo. Dude is a complete bust. I know cam jordan is still putting up good numbers, but father time is creeping up fast. I'd trade now if you can get a third or better.

With a great defense in place.
I think part of this is 1. We play the NFC South teams twice so our D looks better than it was & 2. Teams knew they could play us safe as they knew we would commit a timely penalty and wouldn’t take the ball away from them. They knew we weren’t going to out scheme them like we did under CSP.
Our defensive line won’t be as good this year. Our strength is at LBer and CB. Safety is a huge liability!
Our offensive line is not good enough. McCoy, Ruiz and Ram are good. That left side is complete garbage. I hope Penning gets better, but I feel like he may be another project Peat at this point. QB is a huge question mark. Kamara is good, but we need a complementary back and we have no idea how much time he will miss with a suspension. TE and WR are kind of a bright spot, although we will need a new possession WR with MT13 leaving.
Then there is coaching. I have no faith in Dennis Allen at this point and I’m not sure anyone else does either.
We had double digit losses for the first time in over 15 years. We have some decent players, but no leadership in the coaching staff of on the team. We are that far from contending.

I think with a good coach and solid QB play this roster is FAR better than the somber tone this board has recently been. Maybe not Super Bowl good, but get into the second week of the playoffs? Sure why not.
Problem is at this second we don’t have a QB, and we don’t have a good coach. It’s why I was so adamant that they had to move on from Allen.

What's your definition of contending? Contending for playoff spots? In which case, no they are one of the better teams in a very weak division. However, what's your expectations when they get to the playoffs? We don't stack up well to other good teams within the NFC. Schematically, without Payton this team is one of the worst in the NFL at maximizing offensive personnel's potential. Our strong defense is aging and we are going to have to replace some pretty obvious holes. I also don't like the regression by Adebo and the fact that we traded Marcus Williams for Marcus Maye; the dude is unreliable at best whereas Williams gave the Saints many opportunities to double an extra receiver due to his range.
To say this team is at a crossroads is an oversimplification. I simply don't like who we have driving the bus and the re-tread tires are suspect at best.

agree with your take.
jury is still out on penning, but hurst isn't a bad option at lg if penning can stay healthy.
we're gonna need another solid starting dt and also depth along the entire dline.
gonna need a starting caliber rb this year. kamara needs a compliment and he'll probably miss half the season or so.
definitely need another wr. someone who can read a defense, box out and has a little size to em.
the team is actually better off signing carr if the price is reasonable or re-signing dalton at qb. need to draft a dt, de, rb, wr, lg and a safety who can play deep.
even if we run it back with the dalton/taysom show, a solid draft will probably win the division and put us in the playoffs next year.
we just aren't bad enough to get maye or williams in the '24 draft, but there are some good options at qb in a deep '24 draft class at qb.
can't stop rebuilding the team and there are worse stop-gaps than dalton.

contending?
A relative term. Could we win this division, yes. Could we compete for the NFC, hell no!

Lol since when is Derek carr good?? You people have zero football IQ
Posted on 2/6/23 at 5:14 pm to Handsome Pete
They need a HC so they are far away.

I mean the guy was the favorite for the mvp before he got hurt earlier in his career. He’s definitely played well at different times in his career.

Yes they are a very long way away. Until you do a complete blowup this team is screwed.
Posted on 2/6/23 at 6:19 pm to Hamma1122
Carr has had 8 years, new coaches and new schemes, a new stadium, a no1 RB and got a no1 WR and for all of this how many playoff wins?

No, but the sky screamers here will have you believe we're on par with Chicago and Houston, if not worse.
Both these teams are in FAR better position than the saints right now.
Saints are a bad place right now. Not good enough to contend. But the FO doesn’t want to face reality.

Yes.

. Sign Derek Carr after he gets cut, I trust Khai to spread out his cap it. Whatever you think of him, he'd arguably be a top 3 QB in the NFC and certainly the best in our division. Crazy how all the great QBs are AFC.
We can't afford him. Have you seen this teams cap?
quote:
. Draft Bijan Robinson in the 1st or Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2nd - instant spark to offense and eventual replacement for AK.
AK has a contract that will continue to hurt us. He might not play this year and we still have to pay him his salary.

3. Use the other 1-2 rd pick probably on a DT or maybe an OG that can plug and play.
It'll be for an oft injured player.

4. Pick up another WR as FA or get lucky in rd 3 or 4.
Who's throwing the ball?

Are the Saints really that far away from contending? by Handsome Pete
Too much talk on here of blowing up the roster and tanking. With a great defense in place. It seems like a few good moves could put us right back in it:
1. Sign Derek Carr after he gets cut, I trust Khai to spread out his cap it. Whatever you think of him, he'd arguably be a top 3 QB in the NFC and certainly the best in our division. Crazy how all the great QBs are AFC.
2. Draft Bijan Robinson in the 1st or Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2nd - instant spark to offense and eventual replacement for AK.

4. Pick up another WR as FA or get lucky in rd 3 or 4.
5. Have some MFers stay healthy for once
Same medical staff. Get used to it.
The truth is Carolina or Atlanta will surpass us this year. It's coming. This team needs a complete overhaul and the top brass still thinks we are only a couple pieces away. That's why we are far from competing.

The Saints will never be a contender under this coaching staff.

Brees wasn't Brees until he came to the Saints. Same thing with Tannehill to the Titans.
Brees was at the end of his first contract and still developing after 5 years in the league. There was a linear progression in his game from years 1-3 to years 4-5.
Tannehill gets zero credit for offensive efficiency when they ran Derrick Henry into the ground to mask Tannehill's inability to win games with his arm. Without Henry, Tannehill has been mid at best. I remember when Tannehill couldn't pass for 200 yards for a month when Henry missed time in 2021.

Sometimes QBs get better with different scenery.
Not to mention, both those guys came into better situations from a coaching and talent standpoint. Are you prepared to argue that Carr coming to NOLA is an upgrade when he just had the league's leading rusher and its best WR on the same offense? Is Allen an improvement over McDaniels?
Further, Carr has been in the league NINE years. You know what he is. Brees and Tannehill moved with significantly less experience, not to mention Tannehill was just starting to develop as a QB after playing WR until his junior year at TAMU.

So your plan to make the team a contender is to sign an average qb and draft a first round rb? You should be hired by some team immediately.
Posted on 2/7/23 at 9:04 pm to goatmilker
QB is a big piece to be away from contending though.
