Anyone else think it's insane for one person to take up that much of your teams cap space?

I realize the cap space goes up every year, but Watson's deal is outrageous even for a QB

They should make it to where each team gets 1 franchise player to be exempt from the cap.

The "fully guaranteed" part is truly crazy.
A precedent has been set for future QB contracts.
I wonder how the other owners feel about that.

All that will do is ensure another position takes the place of the old QB. It’ll just inflate the market more

The whole deal is crazy. Which is why I don't understand the people saying this was all about money and calling him a money whore. I really do believe it was down to Atlanta and New Orleans. Nothing out there indicates that it wasn't. It is also fair to say that he probably wanted to go to Atlanta, he does consider that to be home. The thing was Cleveland wanted him and gave him a deal that absolutely no one could refuse. Point it out if I am wrong but I don't think there has ever been a deal like this in the NFL. People will say this cripples them on the cap but we all know they can restructure and massage it in the short term to make it work. They will eventually pay for it. But for now they have a franchise QB and are going for it.

Absolutely, ask GB fans who have a 40M QB and now no #1 WR. They will also be unable to draw any new quality FA WRs/TEs because the overpaid QB might go on a 'retreat' one weekend, and decide he does not want to play FB for them any longer...what a clown show.

I think the solution is a to cap each position at a certain percentage of the cap. Then it’s up to each team to value the position and players and how they want to allocate funds as opposed to having to continually increase cost because one player thinks they are better than someone else.
Players will continue to be eligible for more money as the available funds within their positional cap rises with the rising cap number since it is a perfentage

What really interesting is that if you go look, a team with a QB that’s paid top 5 QB money hasn’t won the SB since 2007. There’s a lot who paid their QBs top 5 after like the Chiefs, Seahawks, us and Packers but no one who did it while the QB was on their big contract. Those things cripple teams.

well wasnt dallas paying dak $40m a year? and didnt aaron get better deal then that?
seems $45m a year was the average pay for a top 5 QB so it doesnt seem out of line based on that
but hell yes, a QB shouldnt be getting a full 3rd of the entire salary cap all by himself, or even a quarter of it, but that is where we are

Every team in the league would be happy to pay aaron rodgers that contract.
They slow played adams. They had the money to pay him.

I'm pretty sure you are right, Ponchy.
My opinion (there is little value there, I know
) is that he had relatively equal offers from Atlanta and NOLA and was either trying to talk himself into staying near home and momma in a situation similar to Houston or going somewhere with a legit chance to win it all. Then Cleveland threw an insane amount of cash at him that he couldn't say no to.

Those figures are nowhere near guaranteed. Even Mahomes 10 yr deal only had around $140m guaranteed. Rodgers had I think $150M? guaranteed. That figure was the biggest amount ever guaranteed in a contract in NFL history...until yesterday, when it became $230M.....beating it by 80....insane figures

It's crazy to think Bill Kuharich & the Saints passed on Brett Favre when he visited during his first FA tour because he was asking for "an unheard of" $4 million dollars a year! And it probably had pennies guaranteed. Green Bay paid his asking price.

yes, that's why teams try to avoid that as much as possible...
i know Browns fans are basking in the glow of pulling of this trade, but when that wears off and they realize how much worse off their future is now, vs. before this deal, they are gonna be pretty upset, especially when this deal didn't get them any closer to the Bills, Bengals, Chiefs, etc...
