That all but seals it. They are not drafting a QB this year.

Not necessarily. Dalton is 1 year backup. Winston is a stop-gap. Book is practice squad fodder until proven otherwise.

In the NFL, you either have your franchise QB or you are trying to get one.

Clearly they just want a veteran backup. Its fine. He's better than Trevor.

This.

The job of a backup is to help the starting QB and assist with plays getting to him. Dalton can be an asset to Jameis on the field and in the film room.

Siemian, Book, and Taysom cannot.

This also ends any Taysom at QB officially

Taysom concentrating on TE removes him from the picture. AD is a solid, experienced NFL backup. Certainly not the QB he once was, but a good backup. If he has to start a game, he will only get a limited amount of resources with the first team. Experience is more important than talent on a short weak start imo. For$3M, a sold hire.

Let's see how he looks in camp as a sophomore. See if he's learning anything.

If something lands in your lap you pull the trigger but feels like Winston is the plan this season and if he doesn’t solidify the job he and a rookie will battle next year not this year.

Just wait when Winston throws a few INT's; fans will be wanting Dalton to play.

I like this... Last year Winston showed more control over his natural impulse to implode but you could see that the anchor was Sean Peyton. It was coaching up and keeping him focused. It was amazing to watch. I'm not saying Pete and Dennis can't do it.... but I'm glad we got the Rifle. I hope he's thinking,"backup, hell, I'm gonna win this job"

Found this as an interesting twist

quote:

Even if the APY for comp pick purposes is only the gtd. amount of $3M, it's enough to qualify Andy Dalton as a compensatory free agent. And that currently means that by signing Dalton, the Saints cancel their projected 3rd/4th round 2023 comp pick for Terron Armstead's departure

LINK

That guy has pretty much figured out the comp pick formula used by the league and tracks the entire leagues comp picks. He’s a solid follow if that part has always been interesting or confusing to anyone

That is bad news.

Great find.

Dalton is not worth losing a comp pick.
