Having a dominant big man would also cause small 5s to foul out much more frequently. I understand the game is not showcasing the 5 at the moment but i believe there is still a dominant role out there for the RIGHT guy/skillset.

I didn’t feel the NBA refs were doing this when Davis and Cousins were playing together. I felt they were doing all they could to prevent the Pels from constantly having that advantage. Similarly when the Pels were running Niko and AD in the playoffs.

Another one I forgot was the advent of the restricted area.

Which wasn't implemented til the 97-98 season.

And that is a perfect example where you can see in real-time the way the league chilled the dominance of big men.

Shaq came into the league as a raw rookie averaging 3.5 blocks per game, 2.7 over his first 6 seasons before the restricted area was implemented. The season after his block total dipped down to 1.7 and barely averaged 2 a game during the rest of his peak. It was not unheard of for good centers to have 4-5 BPG until that point, not we talk about breaking 3bpg as a major acheivement.

Yeah, I routinely made the observation after really getting to see how the league calls true big men game after game with Cousins how hard it is to be a dominant big man with a classic physical style in this league. And why building around big men has been so unsuccessful recently.

If Cousins were born in the 90's, trained up more in that style, he would be spoken of amongst some of the greats.

But in today's game classic bigs have huge uphill battles. While guys like Harden and Curry get ticky tack fouls called on them all day, guys like Cousins get mauled all game and the norms of the league are such that it is allowed, even though the same actions committed against any guard or wing would elicit immediate whistles.

While on the other end big men are called swiftly and promptly for even the smallest of abuses their guard and wing counterparts get away with constantly.

It's a double standard meant to confer a benefit to those positions.

While it doesn't excuse the more egregious stuff, and at some point, you have to just accept it is what it is and not earn a self-defeating reputation, but you totally understand why a guy like Cousins gets so frustrated at times.

Who was the first 3&D stretch 5 prototype?

Ralph Sampson or Bill Laimbeer?

Or someone before?

Hayes needs to eat some rice real bad.

Boogie or Gasul type will run over him now.

How he grows soon

That’s an interesting debate.

Would depend on how you define stretch 5?

I tend to default that it requires stepping out and knocking down threes regularly. So maybe Sikma? Laimbeer never averaged more than one a game.

But I very much could be wrong on that. And there is certainly an argument that people knocking down long twos were stretch guys, even if modern analytics cringes at the lost efficiency.

Ingram is listed at 6,9”, 190.

I’m 5’10”, 185 and I’m in great shape.

I hope that listed weight is wrong or that the kid can add a few pounds.

The Pelicans have a blueprint fellas, they have leadership and they have direction. Jaxson Hayes fits the scheme that Coach Elvin Gentry is trying to run. Didn't you guys hear our new GM,when he said that he was acquiring pieces to fit the scheme. I viewed Jaxson Hayes video and he is a good fit for the up tempo transition game. And as Will Wade reminded us of how important your bigs are,as rebounders and rim protectors. The future is bright,be happy. If Bol Bol wanted to be taken more seriously then he would have gained weight, before declaring. And he would have been more aggressive on the defensive side of the ball.

Screw Bol Bol we got the best Center. Hayes is an unbelievable athlete and has a nice shot. In 3 years Zion and Hayes will be a dynamic duo in NBA.

Hayes dad was an NFL pro for more than a decade; his mom averaged more than 50 PPG in high school basketball. He hit the genetic lottery. He’s going to be really good when he fills out a little more and his shot develops. The fact that he shoots free throws as well as he does tells me he will get there.

I mean to be fair, if you get drafted in the NBA (or NFL for that matter) then hitting the genetic lottery is a given. That being said, he hit it 2x from both sides.

The biggest plus imo is coming from a family that understands what it is like to be a pro athlete and what it takes to succeed.

Per MM, the Atlanta training staff thinks Hayes' ideal playing weight is 245/255, which would put him at basically Tyson Chandler's size.

They had the 8 and 10 picks so they scouted Hayes and that was their take.

Also, I just want to say it is a shame that this is the most active thread in the last few weeks. I feel like we are completely ignoring Zion kind of like we always did with AD before he burned bridges. It's like superman is going to be super so there's not much to really talk about.

After we traded CP3 we spent a year trying to talk ourselves into Eric Gordon as a cornerstone. We already have AD's replacement in place before we've gotten to tell him not to let the door hit him on the way out. This board should be talking more about Zion and agonizing less over the #8 pick.
