With how quiet the trade market is, its a strong possibility Pelicans don’t make a trade. I guess just curious how many on this board would be ok with that and how many would not?

I pretty much gave up any hope of any impact trade When they dumped Kira 3 weeks ahead of the trade deadline instead of waiting to see if his salary could be part of an upgrade. It's one thing to dump it after exploring all opportunities to use his salary. It's cheap and defeatist to do it 3 weeks before the deadline.

When the team says that they will pay the luxury tax for a contender, what they mean is they won't dump contracts in February if they are on a 70 win pace, have no minor injuries, and tickets for the following season are sold out.

I wouldn’t have much of a reaction.
I don’t expect a trade unless it brought in a superstar or close to it, and I don’t know if we have the assets to make that trade.

We clearly have the assets to make a big trade. We have additional first round picks from two different teams, we have an expiring contract and a pseudo-star player that is due for an extension.

It's just a question of finding a trade partner and having the stomach to drastically change the roster dynamics.

Personally I would be fine with it. I’m ok standing pat and seeing what BI/Zion and co look like together in the playoffs. We aren’t winning a title this year, but I doubt whatever comes back to us in a naji or Jonas trade is closing that gap.

We’ve also moved past the first round in the playoffs exactly two(?) times since the franchise moved here. I think this team if healthy has a punchers chance against any other healthy team in the west other than the nuggets and clippers. So unless it’s an earthquake trade, I don’t really want to do anything that makes us worse for this season just to squeeze some value out of expiring contracts.

It's exceedingly rare to have Cinderella teams in the NBA. I mean it happens, but much less than most sports.

Sure is. I wish they would go back to a best of 5 in the first round to have the potential for more upsets. First two rounds really would increase my overall excitement of the NBA playoffs. NBA playoffs is nowhere near the level of excitement for me as: NFL playoffs, College Football Playoffs (especially starting next year, moving to 12 teams), MLB playoffs (tons of upsets), or the NCAA tournament. Pretty much last place for American sports sans NHL which I do not follow at all.

And only four times as the original Charlotte Hornets. They have never made it to the conference finals in either Charlotte or New Orleans. The closest was taking the Bucks to 7 games in the 00-01 season and the 07-08 season where they lost in 7 to San Antonio. It's been rough if you are like me and were a fan of the Charlotte Hornets in the 90s-early millennium and followed the franchise to New Orleans.

Are 2nd round picks the new cash considerations?

Ha that’s great. Can’t imagine there are many of you. Those 90s hornets teams with Zo were awesome.

I became a fan when they first moved to new Orleans. My first game was watching AI knock us out of the playoffs.

The mavericks series, the home wins against SA and the Trail Blazers series were so much fun. Playoff basketball is awesome, and I want more of it even I know the road inevitably ends in Denver or LA.

Agreed. A playoff series is always worth the ride.

Why not? The front office thinks so. Why even watch the games or play the game if you don't think we won't win it all?

You need to trade for a point guard. Hell the team would look and play 100 percent better with even Rondo at the point.

I was a bit young for the Zo/Larry Johnson era. I actually became a fan when they traded Mourning for Glen Rice, who was my favorite player for the entirety of his career. He still holds the record for most points in a single NCAA tournament with Michigan in 1989 when they won it all. The Rice era was my favorite with a mix of he, the OG Curry, Bobby Phills, David Wesley, Anthony Mason, and Divac. The 96-97 season was my favorite as Rice was pretty damn dominant: 26.8 ppg on 47% shooting from three.

Anyways, I'm loyal to my teams so stuck with the franchise when they relocated. Sadly, Shinn was truly a terrible owner.

That is . . . insane.

Rice was 6-8 and shot 40% from 3 for his career. Talk about a guy ahead of his time. If rice comes along 10-15 years later he is taking 8-10 3’s a game instead of 5 and probably a hall of famer.

I’m not trading Naji for 2nds.

I’d also like to resign him in the offseason.

I’m not really interested in making any trades. Just want to see what this team can do in a playoff series and adjust from there.
No role player is making us a contender this year. The only way for us to get better in that regard is by Zion and BI taking their game to the next level, and I’m mainly talking about Zion.

No matter how bad the 24 draft is, trading a 1st for 2nds and a theoretical asset in a swap is stupid.

We all saw how valuable that lakers swap turned out last year and the bucks swap this year isnt going to convey.

Recoup some 2nds by trading naji

How does this team play Naji much more than minimum? Couple of 2nds would make sense.

Naji not being on the roster allows Hawk to actually grow. Idc if we only get 1 2nd for it, it would be totally worth it.

You do realize that they were able to do it at that time without really giving up anything, and the big kicker was they didn't have to take back any salary. And they also got a trade exception of $5.7M for it.

B/c they didn't take back salary, they could still make an uneven trade today, without Kira's outgoing salary.
There's nothign stopping them from trading JV's $15M for Jarrett Allen's $20M. Of course we'd go into the tax if we did that, but we don't need Kira's $5.7M to make that trade today b/c it doesn't have to be exactly equal.

It would have been beyond stupid to not trade Kira at that time. He's a negative asset, and we got a TE for him and only gave up our 24 2nd.
The trade has zero impact on future trades and was all about getting under the tax. It would have been stupid to hold on to him and then be deseprate to get rid of him and maybe have to give up more at the deadline to get under the tax, and we 100% shoudln't be paying the tax just b/c of Kira's contract.

We have one of the best 3-12 roster in the league. This team can make a run, but it's completely up to 3 people. Zion, BI, and Willie. Whatever upgrade you are thinking we can make to a role player, is likely to be rather insignificant if BI and Zion can't lead us to playoff victories, and Willie can't put us in a position to compete at our best.

Be patient, let the season play out, and watch us get close to that 50 win mark and see what we do in the playoffs before making major changes to the roster.
