What happens first… Gayle dives into the luxury tax or coughs up money for new arena?

I know it will be put on back burner because of how we’re playing now, but it seems like a question needed to be discussed.

Not really sure what one has to do with the other. She should honestly do both.

Neither have any direct correlation with the other, I just think this summer will be huge in building for the future of the franchise. Just seems like it’s time for the next step in commitments.

What's wrong with SKC?

I mean it could use some improvements but it isn't the PMAC. It's not that bad.

It’s continually rated as one of the worst arenas in the league and was dated the moment it opened.

That's because all of the ancient arenas are considered "classic venues". I've never had an issue attending games. Get a cold beer and watch the game.

Will not happen. It may be presented to the public as happening, but that money will be recouped through some other lease payment or other deal.

If the taxpayers of New Orleans or Louisiana give a dime to a new SKC it will be too much. Public financing of sports facilities with private anchor tenants is retarded.

It’s the worst arena in the entire NBA.

The venue is convenient, but it seriously lacks the amenities that most up to date arenas have.

From my understanding, it's not even so much about Pelicans games, but it's about being a venue that can attract top artists, and it doesn't have the right layout to be able to get certain artists to perform shows there.

This is also correct. It lacks a lot of back of house amenities too.

One thing that Christian Clark brought up on his podcast a few weeks ago is that when the league expands, Gayle and the team will be getting a $250-$500 million check. That is a significant dent in new arena costs.

Absolutely. She should be responsible for at least half the bill and then let the league and state split the remainder.

As long as the state owns that stake and it isn't a handout.

At least 200 million of that would go straight to the government in taxes…

Most team owners don’t have the money to fund their own stadiums, in the NFL nor NBA.

That's a huge 1 billion dollar+ cost that you have to hope to make money on, and it would be hard pressed to do in lower income areas like New Orleans.

Jerry Jones is making money hand over fist on Jerry World only because its in a high income area.

If there’s one thing any Louisiana resident can’t say its that Gayle and Tom haven’t historically spent money funding things for their teams. 300 million of the superdome renovations are being paid for by Gayle, on top of new practice facilities for both teams, training facilities, cafeterias etc

10 years ago you would get roasted for saying something like this. I’m glad people are finally starting to realize that giving billionaires hundred of millions of tax payer money and getting very little in return is a bad idea.

If those facilities are used only for the team then sure, but the state and local government makes a shitload of money off those arenas from various concerts/events held at them.

You see an initial tax investment in these arenas and think “OMG WHY ARE WE GIVING BILLIONAIRES MONEY” but fail to look at all the money the other events in that arena brings in to the government.

Those are all pennies on the dollar. Half of the Pels facility was repurposed from the old Voodoo locker room that was already on the property.

Cavs just announced building a brand new training facility that’s going to be part of a multi billion dollar redevelopment.
