It’s the worst arena in the entire NBA.
I've attended NBA games in OKC, San Antonio, Houston, and Memphis. I didn't think any of those arenas were noticeably better than SKC.

The not having amenities to attract other events may be a fair point. But with the Superdome right next door, I'm just not we're dying for a new arena. And the location is perfect. If we do build a new arena, it better be in the same spot. Same with the Superdome.

I’ve always thought a new arena needs to be built on the footprint of Champions garage, Lot 3/3a. Team wouldn’t have to move out for 2/3 years. Some serious money also needs to be invested in that area to redevelop the district to attract bigger events that aren’t Superdome related. I know the WNBA is considering Nola to host their ASG. NOLA Center is just sitting there and not being used.

That's not what its really about, but the SKC also has the smallest lower bowl in the NBA

People whose job it is to deal with Arenas, etc say the SKC is the worst.

Its just not up to modern standards.

Who cares? Is it costing the franchise money? Free Agents? Fan experience? I say no to all.

Most likely, yes. There are revenue streams in modern arenas they are not able to take advantage of.

Free Agents?

Several players, including Lebron, have commented on what a dump it is.

Fan experience?

Smallest lower bowl in the NBA, lack of amenities, etc

The back of house stuff is one of the biggest problems that everyone else comments on, and it cannot be corrected.

In addition, Silver has basically said we aren't getting another AllStar Game with this Arena.

The Pelicans don't own the building.

I's owned by the state and is a multi use facility.

It's not just about what is best for the Pels with the SKC. It's about what makes the city the most money.

Right, and there are have been a ton of comments about the back of house, behind the scenes stuff is extremely lacking and cannot be changed even with a reno, and that they are missing out on some events because of it.

Half of the Pels facility was repurposed from the old Voodoo locker room that was already on the property.

Thats crazy to say when the Pels facility was literally constructed from the ground up in 2013, the only facility on the grounds before then were the Saints facilities.

You can even go back and look at Google Maps streetview in 2011 and now and see there’s a whole arse new building

You are saying it's costing the Pelicans money and then agreeing with the next post that this isn't about the Pelicans. Which is it?

Who gives af what Lebron or anybody else who was never gonna play here anyway thinks. We aren't missing out on FAs because of the arena. You're relying on national "experts" to inform you opinion on the arena being the worst. The fan experience isn't significantly worse than most arenas.

I'll grant the argument that amenities needed for concerts and other events may not be up to par, but we have other venues in the city. New Orleans hosts more large events than any city in the country.

And you’d be wrong. They built a new building (closer to existing Saints building) that houses all sales/marketing/etc. Across the parking lot is basketball ops. It’s the building that has the Pels logo on it. The back half of the building, closest to the Saints indoor, was the Voodoo locker room. You’ll also see a turf field 50 feet behind that. That building was retrofitted and the gym/coaches offices were the only things built from ground up. The players locker room/team room/equip and workout area are all housed in part that existed before Benson bought the team.

Hurricane is involved with the teams in some small way, he has had some insider info on them on multiple occasions.

You're arguing that the organization is losing money while acknowledging that they don't own the building.

Things like an inability to attract larger artists I imagine do not cost the Pels any money since they don't own the building.

But it seems at least some of the same reasons larger artists won't come, like the amenities and smaller lower bowl would also directly affect the Pels.

That's less tickets they can sell in the lower bowl, less money coming in. Stuf like that.

They may not be losing money, but any fan can see that the upper bowl is continually half full at best. Most teams have attendance goals and they’re likely struggling to hit those. Money to be made off sales, concessions, etc.

My point is this is the biggest issue and I would argue it has little to no impact on the Pelicans. New Orleans is not struggling to get concerts and big events. There are events in SKC almost every weekend it seems and the bigger events can go to the Dome.

Just looked it up and we sell about the same amount of tickets as the Thunder who are 2nd in the West. We don't sell all of the tickets we could as of now. The counter argument could be that we would sell more if we had a nicer arena. I'm not sure I agree with that. If we continue to win, this city will increasingly get behind the team.

No argument here. But how does this mean we need to build a new arena?

Because the NBA is expecting certain criteria in venues and SKC is lacking. The building as it stands now cannot be reconfigured to add more lower bowl seating, clubs, etc. There needs to be additional locker rooms added to accommodate performance groups and in game entertainment that doesn’t exist at the moment. The back of house space isn’t enough for non Pels events.

OKC is building a new arena with 70% of it coming from a voted 1% additional sales tax voted for span of 72 months. Gayle could easily take out a loan against her assets to help foot the bill. There could be a hotel tax.
