re: What do you see as a "successful" year? On the flip, what would make you question the FO?

Here you go.. LINK
It lists a bunch of guys that found success later in their career. Billups didn't make his first all-star team till his 9th season.
Billups is a legit example. Nash is arguably the only one of those that became top 15 player but almost all of those had a completely different trajectory than Zion. The entire list is of guys who were gradually getting better. Zion peaked 6 years ago and has shown no improvement, worse at anything. That is a list that you can look at and think "This guy is getting better and better", Zion is a guy that everyone would love if he could be the player he was in his sophomore season under Van Gundy.
Zion may prove me wrong, I hope he does, but his career tells me he won't. I could maybe see him jumping into a top 35 player, but in no way will he ever be a player than basically half the entire NBA would want him as their #1.

quote:Oh, I certainly agree with that. But I'd call that a successful transaction, not a successful season on the court.
Moving on from Z and anyone else holding us back IS success one way or another.
quote:That IS basically all I care about, that and what a trade package for Trey could be, since we won't compete for much of anything any time soon. I'd prefer to not trade him without context, but getting the right return for him is better for the franchise given where we are now imo.
If y'all really think the current team is so bad then all you should care about is Fears/ Queen/ '27 Bucks and whoever ends up looking good this year to keep with them.
quote:Not really. i can expect the team to be bad, it does not mean it was a successful season if they're less bad but not exactly good.
I find it amusing that people in here will expect no more than 20 wins and then act like its only successful to them if we make the playoffs. Because expecting 20 wins and getting 44 would be a huge step back.
This is a team that hasn't been rebuildilng for years. We won 49 games 3 seasons ago, we 100% were NOT rebuilding the past 2 years. If you're not rebuilding, the goal at an absolute minimum should always be playoffs, considering over half the conference makeks the playoffs, and 3-4 of those will be tanking. I can expect 32 wins and still call 38 wins and missing the play in a failure of a season, those 2 things do not contradic t each other.

quote:That dream is over unfortunately.
Zion becomes top 15 player.
I fully and very confidently believe there is a 0.0% chance that happens, again unfortunately.
Zion isn't as athletic as he used to be. We can see he's gotten in better shape, but he does not have the mentality of the dudes who are top 15 players to get to that level. He's just so far away, his game is so limited, it just cannot happen. I wish it could, but that ship has sailed.

quote:More so on Pels Twitter, but I see so much talk of Zion being a generational talent who still has MVP potential, it's wild.
Year 8 baby! This is the year it finally happens! Got any examples of often injured and overweight guys making a leap from being a top 50ish player to top 15 in an offseason? In year 8? We know what Zion is, he is not a top 15 player, just stop.
Luka's out here averaging 34/8/8 for an entire season and can't win an MVP. We would go crazy if Zion put up those stats for ONE game, they are not the same lol. A quick AI check shows Zion has done that twice in his 7 year career, just for reference

Yea he doesn't have the "hating to lose" mentality and it reflects in how he plays at times. That keeps him from expanding his game and motivates him to reach the next level.
That's where I'm optimistic with Fears. He definitely has that dawg mentality and once his game develops, he's going be the guy.

Trade Zion is a successful year at this point.
Posted on 9/30/26 at 12:54 pm to Dantheman504

There's different levels of "successful" IMO.
1. Playoffs + a clear long term vision.
2. A loss in the play in + Fears/ Queen/ Mathurin/ Missi looking like key future starters/ stars.
3. I'd argue its successful if we barely miss the playoffs but our young players look good and we finally trade Z and others for picks/ young players to pair with them.
We have the Bucks swap for 2027 and should get a Top 10 pick.
This season should be focused on who fits, what works, and planning for the future with Murray/ Poole/ Z and their $110mil combined salary up for extension/ trades.
Alright
What about question #2

They do not contradict each other, its also not what I was referencing. If we win 44-48 games and get eliminated as the 7/8th seed due to injuries, a game winning shot, or bad play from Z for example then its hard to call that a failure of a season.
No one expects us to win a championship. You are now hedging success as getting eliminated 0-4 vs the absolute closest thing to it in my example.
There has to be realistic expectations, if you expect us to get outplayed by a Spurs/ OKC team in the 1st rd then is losing a close play in game that much less of an achievement?
We are also one of the Top 5 youngest teams in the NBA. Going from 26 wins to a competitive play-in game is very successful for our young players and development comparably.

But I'd call that a successful transaction, not a successful season on the court.
The specific question was "successful year". And then followed up by "what would make you question the FO".
Making a final assessment on Zion/ Murray, Fears/ Queen looking great, and going from 26 to 44+ wins would be a successful year comparably.
And doing those things should give people peace of mind regarding Dumars/ Weaver instead of questioning them.
The Pelicans might be the only fan base that could win double the games from the previous season, have all their young players look good, and still act like we are going backwards. Even Browns fans aren't that dramatic.

Spurs might be even younger and they did NBA Finals.
I compare with them cause Zion and Wemby had similar hype before the draft (Lebron etc).
Age isn’t really an excuse to even miss play-in in all the cases.

quote:No, i don't think this and I didn't say this. Would you correlate "going backwards" to failure or success? If missing the playoffs is "failure" then that's going backwards from y'alls POV.
So you think if this team wins over 50 games, that the fans will think we are moving backwards?
quote:
Because expecting 20 wins and getting 44 would be a huge step back.
44 vs 50 is the difference between play in/ playoffs.
Several people in here said missing the playoffs is a FAILURE.
You are actually proving my point which was that winning 50 games and getting eliminated 0-4 is a minuscule difference vs winning 44 games and losing in the Play- In. But one is considered successful while the other is failure.
Which essentially means that we could win nearly double the amount of games, make huge improvements, and fans would still see it as... A failure (not my words, see the first page).
Idk how you are agreeing with me and arguing at the same time, while claiming I'm a mouthpiece when In reality i repeated what was said by others and you incorrectly chose to be my mouthpiece and misinterpreted what I said.
The consensus is that playoffs= success and losing the play in = failure even though that can be a 1 win/ loss differential. Doesn't make sense.
Clearly failure/ success is not black and white and there can be a gray area. Which was what I said in my first post while giving different examples of "success".

Have you answered question 2 yet?
Posted on 9/30/26 at 8:51 pm to Fun Bunch
40ish wins but Queen and Fears are improved and we battle thru some normal injuries play good D = success
40ish wins or worse, no improvement from the 2nd year guys and big boy/Trey stay healthy = super failure we question why the FO doesn’t see what every fan sees

For me, the expectation for this season is making the play-in games and then losing.
Making the actual playoffs would be a successful season, and missing the postseason entirely would be a failure.
