What did Griffin do wrong this off season?

So much fricking bitching and whining. What exactly did he do wrong? Who should he have signed that he didn't?

My biggest complaint about Griff is what he tried to do.

Signing Lowry to that insane contract would have fricked us harder than any first round pick he traded.

You can't force players to sign here. And I really don't see who we missed out on at these prices.

If you want to bitch, there are two legit gripes:

- He should have dealt Lonzo at the deadline. But even then, it doesn't sound like the return was any better.
- Giving up the first for Graham. It was a calculated risk and I can see both sides.

Since the season ended he:

Dumped Stan who this board hates.
Dumped Bled who this board hates.
Dumped Lonzo who half this board hates.
Dumped Adams who 2/3 of this board hates.

Signed a very good shooter for half of Lonzo's salary.
Signed an up and coming coach who should be able to relate to the players better.
Upgraded Adams for Val.
Did not tie us to a non-needle mover with an insane contract so we still have tons of flexibility.

So what exactly is so awful? Again, so much bitching but please list names of who should be on this team that isn't and how you would have got them here.

Sat on his hands in FA when Zion is already threatening to leave.

Zion listens to the national media and Griff took all the good will of the Memphis trade and absolutely shite the bed in FA. All Zion is hearing is that no one wanted to take more money to come here. PR matters, especially to coddled athletes like Zion.

Just be patient and enjoy the development. They might just get another series win in the next decade.

Even this isn't a valid gripe. We were still trying to make the playoffs at this point in the season. Imagine Zions frustration if we trade by all accounts his best friend on the team and give up hope of the play in

Overpaying guys just so somebody will take your money isn't a good strategy either.

You’re right, he probably didn’t try to sign Paul, Lowry, Dinwiddie, Hardaway Jr, and probably a dozen other players that weren’t reported.

You probably could throw some blame at Zions camp for our lack of free agent signings. Why would players come here long term if they're hearing our star is on his way out

Only thing I think he did wrong was misjudging his ability to get the better free agents to come here. Maybe it makes him a bit more aggressive at the trade deadline.

Most of the issues with this offseason are the crazy costs (including opportunity costs) fixing the disaster that was last offseason. Griffin dug a huge hole and we're an inferior team/roster to where we were 2 years ago. That's the macro issue.

Micro issues include being out-negotiated for the Zo S/T (or the Graham one, however you want to look at it) and seemingly whiffing on his major plan points (Lowry, making the Memphis S/T bigger, etc). It looks like we just spent a lot of capital (Jrue, multiple 1sts, and Zo) the past 14 months to acquired Devonte Graham, some future late 1sts, and an expiring Jonas, in hindsight.

He clearly could've got more in the Zo trade. That much is obvious. Still need to see the rollover of the 1st sent for Devonte to say whether that was a good deal or not.

I'll admit I'm a casual fan and don't know everything, but I guess my frustration is we cleared all this money up and so far haven't done much with it. I agree I would rather them not blow their loads and overpay people but surely there were some guys out there we could've signed on a reasonable deal. I am glad they got Graham I just hope we aren't done in free agency.

You can't make players sign here.

He played the P.R. game and put it out there early that there was interest in Lowry but he didn't have any interest in the Pels.

Dinwiddie turned down our money.

Hardaway Jr. Turned down our money.

So what else was he supposed to do? What solutions would you propose?

Zion fricked us

What decent starter-caliber player will sign on in one of the smallest markets, knowing that the best player on the team is leaning hard to leave asap?

Spurs had less leverage than we did and they got more for derozan. We gave up more in the Devonte trade. All we got was 2 2nds and a decent player on an expiring.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. We were literally named in almost every single FA pursuit there was.
