No, but his rebounding is going to be very important this season

Win share and VORP are cumulative stats. BPM is a rate stat. Since he played a bit more minutes than the other best players he will have a higher VORP and win share. his BPM/VORP is a boosted by his defensive rebounding.

no one does.
the word SYSTEMS is used in a new way. its either a change by a phone or he doesn't know English well enough to express his idea.

basketball requires several abilities. he has some.
other people can shoot 3s.
other people can defend a fast player.
he is the best rebounder.

JV was occupying space that Zion will take up now. I'd expect his numbers to go down but his efficiency to go up. He's a great 4th option to have because he can step up and be a 3rd option on any given night if you need him to.

Yeah, I would be very surprised if he averages more than 15 ppg this season. Wouldn’t be surprised with a line of 12/11 or something.

If you watch crunch time...of game 6 vs the Suns...in our last game of the year, I think you can get an idea just how important WG thinks Val is for the Pels. And it's only gonna get MORE obvious next year. All his numbers will go down next year and FWIW...the same is true for McCollum, although CJ will still be a valuable asset next year, even WITH his lousy defense.

I hope this is true…Zion has been a super effective scorer and offensive rebounder (particularly of his own misses) when healthy, but a lot of the rest of his game hasn’t been nearly as good (ex. 4.5 defensive rebounds per game from a guy with his size and athleticism is simply embarrassing…he was tied with juggernauts like Tyler Herro, Kelly Oubre, and Donte DiVincenso and behind PGs Steph Curry and Kyle Lowery ) and the Pels really need him to play on both ends.

I hope he come back and dominates the boards like JV, but he still has to prove he will play on that end of the floor.

I’m not sure it’s embarrassing. Zion is undersized (height and length wise) down low and half the time he is leaking out. I think a simple change in strategy and philosophy would probably result in him grabbing 9 boards a game instead of 7.

I don’t know how else to describe it….Zion was outside of the top 60 in defensive rebounding and behind a bunch of guards…all while being one of the top offensive rebounders at the same time, so it isn’t a lack of ability.

The defensive rebounding stat...is usually the most deceiving stat in the game of basketball. Val is the perfect example with his inflated defensive rebounding stats.

Valanciunas and Herb are the best on Hustle plays LINK
I don't know contested rebounds percentage of JV but it's not bad if he has a lot of contested rebounds.

Nah, inflated defensive rebounding stats are when everyone gets out of the way for Russell Westbrook so he can rebound missed free throws.

Pels were top 5 in offensive and defensive rebounding percentage last year with JV anchoring us. He’s a legitimate advantage down low on the boards.

Westbrook made a joke of the defensive rebounding stat when he (and the Thunder) decided to conspire to let RW set the triple double record that year he won the MVP (which was also a joke)

Interesting stats: RW was 4th in defensive rebounds that year. On offensive rebounds that year (which are nearly always a legit stat...Drummond was 1, Gobert was 2,D Jordan was 3 and RW was...43rd.

Defensive rebounds can be, and often ARE...a total BS stat.

Centers usually are not the beneficiaries of inflated rebounding numbers. They often set up the guards because they are busy boxing out. Robin Lopez is a perfect example of this because his rebounding numbers were never that great, but the team rebounding numbers when he was on the court usually were.

I don't think there's anything misleading about JV's rebounding stats. We see him getting hit in the face several times a game because he's fighting hard down low. Look at the contested rebound stats. He's tied for 8th with Embiid at 5 contested rebounds per game. LINK

Zion wasn't asked to rebound a lot. He was asked to sprint the floor when the other team shot the ball. So Lonzo could throw him a 90 foot pass and he get a fast break opportunity.
