Source: The Pelicans plan to waive shooting guard Sindarius Thornwell.

The team thought he did well during his time in New Orleans, but the decision was a tax-related move.

Pelicans are waiving Sindarius Thornwell, a team source confirms.

Pelicans are making the move for tax line reasons with the guarantee date on his contract looming - team is $502k below the luxury tax.

Also frees up a spot for possible trade.

A trade or free agent must be incoming soon

Also, we're already under the tax, so does this potentially mean something else is in the works?

Translation they plan to bring in another minimum contract player or are making a trade where they take slightly more money back.

So somebody else saw that pass he threw straight to the Phoenix player in the last minute of the game.

It has to. We are already under the tax so that doesn't make any sense, UNLESS...

We are bringing someone in as a FA or in a trade.

well it’s mainly for tax reasons. His contract was about to be fully guaranteed.

Tho I think we all know a trade is about to happen

On the surface, that doesn't matter, since they were below the tax either way.

BUT...

It could be that they just didn't want another guaranteed contract on the roster, and wanted the flexibility of a little extra money and another roster spot for trade purposes. They don't have one lined up, just want the flexibility. Now they don't have to send out another contract to take on multiple extra guys.

As far as I know, they can always re-sign him later and he's not guaranteed.

Or just want the slightly extra flexibility if they should chose to make a trade. We could sign a guy to a 10-day contract if needed to fill the role Thornwell was filling.

Yeah that is my thinking now as well.

I WILL say...having today and tomorrow off is the longest stretch we have had in awhile without a game, and then we have a game Wednesday vs Detroit and Thursday vs Bucks.

So we would only potentially be shorthanded for 2ish games if guys had to sit out until trade completed for Covid Protocols.

Nah, it just has to be 500k more than whatever we're sending out. Doesn't mean it's a big salary. Also, this could just be in preparation for a possible future trade, not necessarily a done deal trade.

Right, maybe they just want the flexibility. They can get 10 day contracts as previously pointed out for basically what Thornwell can do.

Doesn't make sense to guarantee him the rest of the year.

There are too many variable to say. It could be JJ alone or Lonzo alone or either of those with Jaxson/Meli. I haven't paid much attention to cap space this year, but I think they have in the ball park of $300k they can bring back over what they send out after cutting Thornwell.

Another thing to look for, Illyasova is still unsigned and could probably be a better stretch 4 than Melli. It might just be after seeing how useful a 1-7 Melli was last night, maybe they want to bring in a better Melli.

It is weird to me that no one has signed Ilyasova if he was willing to go somewhere for a minimum.

I think Griffin is likely trying hard, but of JJ, Lonzo and Bled, he is by far the hardest to move in my opinion, without having to give up any other value.

I don't think we are even trying to move Lonzo anymore. I'm sure he is still trying with Bled, Melli, and JJ.

If there is a possible trade out there, why not get a better Illyasova and trade for Nemanja Bjelica. I'm not sure why but he has fallen out of favor with Luke Walton.

Bjelica is older so I wouldn't give up much for him, but he is definitely someone I'd be targeting.

Because the Kings will probably ask for some value in return. Like actual, real value. If all we had to give them was like Melli and Gabriel and a 2nd we would have done it
