This Nate Jones guy seems pretty smart.

It can also "work" with Boston having a solid season, then flaming out in round 1 or 2 of the playoffs, AD walks, Celtics are left with very little from all those assets they had.
Of course. That's the risk. It's that versus you have a Kyrie/AD pairing for the next five years.

God I want Fletcher to be right just once!!!

Boston's dilemma: Offer Tatum -- along with a package of young players and picks -- and New Orleans probably bites. But if Kyrie walks this year, Davis the next all the gains made in the Nets trade disappear.
The alternative is Kyrie walks. AD goes elsewhere. Horford opts in. Boston doesn't have the cap room to add significant pieces. You gamble that Tatum and Brown develop into absolute studs/Hayward returns to form quickly because they aren't title contenders otherwise. And they will be in Giannis' and potentially Kawhi's shadow for the next several years. At some point they have to shoot their shot.

Normally I don't comment on downvotes, but are there seriously people here that would be happy to get only Tatum, Smart, and the #14 for AD? That's objectively worse than what the Lakers have on the table.

Pels trade AD to Celtics knowing AD "plans" to be their only one year. Knowing KD is out for all next season, Celtics go to Kyrie with a one year offer. Play with AD for one year and we'll convince both you and AD to stay. I don't think Kyrie says no to this

this is what Lakers fans don't get. I couldn't tell you how many times I've heard people say "we can wait till 2020 to get AD."
They will/have to sign someone this summer & Ingram will be a RFA next summer. Where will all this money come from to sign AD?
also I didn't think about the impact of KD on Kyrie in that he could lean towards Boston if the Celtics get AD. but it seems completely reasonable

Irving could have just opted in if that was the case

the Durant thing is huge
he can just opt in and rehab on GSWs cap
then make his move next year
this affects every other max FA plus the Davis trade

Thats been my feelings as well.
Lebron is not gonna wait patiently for AD next season as he is turning 36.
Rich knows this, AD certainly knows this, Ainge has to suspect this. It's likely now or never and Ainge is willing to call the bluff.
As not only will the Lakers become remote, but other options will look less appealing. Kawhi either stays in Toronto or helps anchor and close up the Clippers cap space as they make a run, Lakers make moves and fill out theirs. The Knicks end up with no one of note. Kemba stays in Charlotte on max. So where does AD look around next season after a potential finals caliber run and say he wants to jump ship and leave for?

But is it really true that the Lakers would put themselves in a position where they couldn't sign AD the following year? Would they really use this summer to spend themselves out of the ability to sign AD next year? I know that LeBron isn't getting any younger, but I wonder how those decisions would play out.

While it's a dumb take, they could theoretically sign AD next summer and then go over the cap to sign Ingram, right? They would just have to punt next season, too, which would be really stupid.

why not?
they still would have his cap hold unless they renounced him or he signed elsewhere
NM the rose rule thing
You’re right

the
100%. Lakers are on the clock with LeBron. both because LeBron & fans want to win & LeBron is getting up there in age.
Add in the fact that the FA pool is much much larger now than it will be in 2020 (outside of AD). and again they need money for Ingram in 2020 because he'll be a RFA

They won’t have a choice. They went half-in half-out last season hoping to save cap room for a run at FAs this offseason and it turned into a disaster.
As old as LeBron is, he won’t waste another season doing that. Especially if Golden State is going to be short handed.
