Shams Charania @ShamsCharania

The NBA has set the transaction window for its 30 teams: June 23 (12 pm ET) to June 30 (11:59 pm ET), sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium

Teams can conduct rest of season contracts, substitute players ($183,115 minimum for two years of service), two-way contracts, and waivers during the window.

The Pels would need to cut someone to make any moves so I don't think we'll see much.

The question is whether Darius Miller is ready to return or not. I think that he is, but if not, is there any reason not to cut him and add somebody who can at least be a good practice player?

Darius has a 7.5 mil expiring contract next year. He has a great trade bait contract (no offense to him as a player). So I'd say keeping him is more useful than a good practice player right now.

I thought teams were going to be allowed 17.

True, but that's 15 players plus the 2 way guys.

quote:

Teams are allowed to bring as many as 17 players to Orlando, including 14 or 15 players on a standard NBA contract and additional two-way spots. For instance, Brooklyn can designate two-way players Chris Chiozza and Jeremiah Martin as roster spots 14 and 15 to replace injured stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. However, the Nets wouldn't be allowed to sign two replacements for Durant and Irving.

LINK

I'm assuming by the way this is phrased that the 2 way players in the Brooklyn Example remain on 2 way contracts instead of needing to be converted to a regular contract.

Does anyone have ESPN Insider? Bobby Marks just posted an article that should outline the roster rules and might clarify a few things LINK

Does it have any value in a trade anymore? I thought they changed the rules such that non-guaranteed contracts had no value in a trade. The value was when this past season when he had a guaranteed salary followed by a non-guaranteed year.

So you guarantee it for next year and trade him, if that’s what we need to do, or you simply don’t guarantee it, and he’s not on the team.

It’s non-guaranteed for a couple more weeks. If you keep him past 7/8 without renegotiating the guarantee date, we are on the hook for $7.5M. Cannot see the Pels paying that.

If Pels plan on letting him walk, I would not mind them releasing him and grabbing Alonzo Trier who was cut by Knicks (if that is allowed under this new transactional period).

they could do it but trier is not playoff eligible.
would be a bet on the future

question is...whose spot next year would he take?

If he is not playoff eligible may not be worth it. I was thinking they could see him in practice and late in games (if game in hand) to see if he is worth bringing back next season.

Are we sure he’s not playoff eligible? I’d take him over Frank...they are essentially the same player but feel like Trier is a better defender.

Per this article, he could play in the 8 games in Orlando, but not the playoffs. May still be worth a look (i.e. extended tryout) if we are going to release Miller anyway.

If he could play in the 8 games that would be worth it. If he could still practice with the team that’s fine.

Playoffs the rotation is cut down drastically. Maybe 8 guy play regularly in the playoffs.

I can't see them cutting anybody to make room for a non top 8 rotation player. That's just bad for your reputation with free agents.

Miller is such a different scenario, though. His expiring contract seems to be the only reason he's in the league at this point.

Is it really “cutting him”? If the season had gone on as planned he would likely have been “cut” on July 8th. He was brought on as a contract for trade purposes that never happened.

Yeah, Miller got 2x what he was worth and didn't even play this season. I doubt his feelings will be hurt and FAs would understand.

It's kind of weird that the NBA didn't adjust these contract deadlines (unless I'm missing something). Miller should be allowed to play the rest of the season for us and then be cut without any guaranteed salary kicking in.

I am like 99% sure that Miller's contract and the contract of everyone else in a similar situation was extended as part of the new agreement of the league and the players association. Darius Miller isn't the only player in the league in that situation.
