So, who can they get to be a back up center?

I like Hayes, but he's no where near ready.

Full disclosure: I'm absolutely over the moon this is all I have to bitch about

Nobody. They are too close to the tax to really make any maneuvers.

I figured as much, and I doubt it's worth using any of the draft capital they've accumulated

Thankfully If Hayes continues to struggle there are some passable options still lingering out there that we could shuffle through to give us 5-10 minutes a night if we need to go that route:

- Taj Gibson
- John Henson
- Tyson Chandler
- Dewayne Dedmon
- Kyle O’Quinn
- Ilysova

But I’m guessing Hayes will get a half dozen to a dozen games before we start down that path. Maybe Tiger or someone can go into the cap issues, but it would shock me if this team continues to plummet with Adam’s off the floor or if an injury/covid issue pops up and we don’t make a move...Unless they secretly think Hernangomez is the answer?

What about Gabriel? Honestly I don’t know much about him but some on here seem to think highly of him. Is his injury somewhat serious?

Wouldn’t be mad with John Henson at all

Admittedly, we only saw a few minutes of him in the preseason, but my take based on that was that he's a downgrade from Okafor at that position. Very disappointing.

According to BBall reference he was estimated to play 16% of his minutes at center, so maybe, but it still feels like if Hayes isn’t gonna be reliable enough that we would probably need to bring in someone.

Looking back who would have been a better pick at that spot?

There’s also Will Magnay, our two way center. Don’t think he’s playing yet (visa problem maybe). He might be worth a closer look.

I think the obvious answer right now is Reddish.

Guy is blowing up and looks like a true 2-way 3 and D forward that can guard 2-4 and even 1-5 in short bursts.

Our best option for this year would be trading Melli or Hayes and a pick for someone. One of those salaries must go out for us to add anyone worth while. But they will try Gabriel first.

Not until March, but maybe something like Melli, Willie H and a pick for Nerlens Noel

Unfortunately, I don’t think either of them have any real value aside from being upside filler in a bigger trade.

Though while I’m starting to feel my draft night skepticism was more rightly placed than I had allowed some on here to convince me otherwise, I don’t know I really want to give up on Hayes until we at least get another full season and see where things stand. If he still seems like he hasn’t put anything together after 70 more games, then yeah, it’s probably time to stop thinking of him as a long term core piece, but he is someone that probably more than any other player was negatively affected by the shortened offseason and new system.

Is it really not possible to bring in a guy like Taj or Henson on a minimum contract? I’m asking because others seem to think the cap makes it impossible

We are about $500,000 under the luxury tax. And while going barely over doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, it prevents you from sharing in the spread of the luxury tax funds, and opens you up to possible repeater tax penalties if you go over next season. So I think you can pretty much count on us not going over for any reason. Someone must go out.

If there was someone really worth it, I think you could trade Melli and a second into someone’s open cap space to free the money. But Melli or Hayes must go out IMO

In terms of weight Gabriel is a little small at PF. He's definitely too small to play center on a consistent basis.

In some matchups we might get away with it, but it's not a long term solution.

On his injury, it's day to day.

He wasn't even supposed to really get minutes last season.

He was always going to be a multi year project and should be viewed as such. There's no real benefit at all IMO to trading him and a pick to get a meh return. It's a short term play, and we still don't know what Hayes will be in 3 years.
