How did they turn it around and the Pelicans didn't? All 3 team were in the same sport in rebuilding a franchise.

Is it all about the front office wanting to spend money and get the best of the best?

How much was it Coaching with Bill Green?

OKC lucked into the Clippers being stupid and trading them SGA along with a bunch of great picks.

Spurs lucked into the league kissing Pops arse and getting Wemby.

Drafted well, made good decisions most of the time, and luck.

While we took Dyson, they took Jalen Williams.

While our young talent peaked early (Ingram), theirs continued to grow (sga).

While they opted to clear money and accumulate assets the past decade, we used assets to accumulate talent that didn't mesh.

While they had a formulated plan, we kept changing coaches every year.

After being forced to play AD and not tank, and after basically being forced to trade him to LAL.

Not really kissing our arse, just like Dallas got a consolation prize for trading Luka to LAL

There are two ways to get good in the NBA for non marquee cities.

1. Draft a legit top 5 player. Spurs method.
2. Identify and trade for a guy who could be one. OKC method.

Trade old for young and keep swinging until you hit. Dumars won't do that though. He'll trade for an older player.

Good organizations vs bad organizations. It's really as simple as that.

GREAT QUESTION

OKC Comparison

They jettisoned a waning superstar (PG-13) who wanted out, targeted his replacement who hit (SGA) and then wisely built around him. In other words, they maximized Paul George's haul.

Meanwhile, we traded a superstar who wanted out (AD), identified his replacement who turned out to be fool's gold (# 1) and then foolishly tried to build around him. In other words, we squandered Anthony Davis' haul.

San Antonio Comparison

They lucked out, won the 2023 draft lottery, and made a pick who has, in short order, become the face of the league.

Meanwhile. we lucked out, won the 2019 draft lottery and made a pick who has, in seven years, become the laughingstock of the NBA.

^^^^^^^^^

MORAL OF THE STORY

We had the exact same opportunities that both OKC and SA had and blew it big time.

DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!!!

Addendum: Remember, all this is on the "Piano Man", David Griffin, not Joe Dumars.

Pelicans did a lot of things right. Problem was the big draft pick - Zion - took too long to take his job seriously. Window closed. Everyone left or got fired. Back to zero.

Leadership at the top determines the outcome of organization. We’ve never had good leadership here.

That implies he is now taking it seriously. He hit one 3 pointer this season. He only played so many games to lock in his salary.

I’m watching game 1 of the NBA finals. Watching several guys take their craft seriously. Multiple tools and effort on both ends of court.

Demps did all he fricking could and 1000% did his job getting Cousins.

It cannot be said enough that the Pelicans are a vastly different franchise if Cousins doesnt pop his achilles and Zion cared.

You are delusional. Demps made piss poor trades and horrible roster construction. Also stupidly drafted Hield over Murray.

You are delusional. They were perpetually injured in the AD era. And a legit contender team with jrue AD and Boogie

That literally got us Boogie lol. Is your memory leaving you?

You act like the Boogie era was the golden age here. We had what a nice 12 game run when everything was clicking before the injury? That was a lot of running and gunning in uncle Al’s system that wasn’t sustainable. And no one knows how that woulda played out in the playoffs.

I give you that was Demps only plus trade value wise but it was basically the crippled kid beating up the sped kid in a trade….

Still doesn’t excuse the fact he passed on a number two player on a championship team for Hield amongst his other shitty decisions as gm.

Nah my memory is fine, like I still remember you making fun of Dyson a few weeks ago because he was having trouble guarding Brunson. You know the guy that has now led his team to 12 playoff wins in a row and was named ECF MVP…..

Your love affair with Dyson is becoming borderline creepy.

Some lottery luck, quality draft selections for good depth, front office patience and letting the young team develop to decide what to do.
