Report From The Clippers' Huddle

Lucked out Tuesday afternoon. A buddy called and said his boss was giving him a pair of seats court side for the Pels-Clips game. Turns out they were end seats right next to the Clippers bench. Montrez Harrell actually sat in the seat right in front of me for several of Doc Rivers clip board sessions during time outs.
Anyway besides some quality jaw jacking with Doc and some of the other players, it was way cool to hear how an experienced NBA staff (including a dapper Sam Cassell!) approached dealing with Anthony Davis and the rest of the Pels line up. Nothing earth shattering but thought I'd share a few of their takes:
-They thought they could dog Elfrid Payton. The coaches were constantly on Pat Beverley and Avery Bradley to get up in Payton's grill because "he can't deal with on-ball pressure." I thought he dealt with it pretty damn well and may have tossed that observation their way toward the end of the game after a few cold ones;
-Doc thinks the Pels are lazy getting back on defense. He was constantly imploring his guards to get the ball up the floor because "you know they don't like to run back." I didn't notice us getting beat back up the floor too often, but this was a constant theme for the Clips staff. Doc may be thinking of the Boogie-era Pels;
-They were getting ready to strangle Pat Beverley for switching on to Davis all the time. When the Pels had the ball the Clips bench was constantly yelling "no switch, no switch!" and still Beverley would switch. It was hilarious because he'd come over and say "Coach, I had to!" but you for sure got the feeling somewhere in his mind he was like "I can check this big mother!" He couldn't. Still, I'd love to have Beverley on the Pels;
-Boban came over and stood next to us a few times and that is the largest human being I have ever seen up close, even bigger than Shaq (young Shaq, who I ate nachos next to one time). No offense meant to the guy, but it seriously felt like Big Foot had just walked out of the woods and was looming over you.
-They were really working one of the refs hard, name of Rodney. Every call almost was "Come on, Rodney!" "No way, Rodney!" Call something on Davis, Rodney!" Finally my buddy and I had to take up for him. "Stay strong, Rodney!" "Don't let 'em push you around, Rodney!" Rodney finally looked over and gave us the thumbs up;
-Doc was great with the fans and you could tell even a lot of the Pels players like him, as they'd stop by to chat it up during time outs or when back on defense during foul shots at the other end. A couple of Pels fans were dogging him pretty good but he didn't mind. When Beverley and Bradley were struggling to score late in the game, one guy yelled "better put Cassell in, Doc!" and Rivers kind of playfully shoved him down toward the scorer's table;
-Didn't get any good burns in but when Lou Williams was walking back to the bench after hitting a 3-pointer off the backboard I did say "Hey Lou, you've got to call glass first if you're going to bank them in." He turned around and gave me a quick smile and fist bump.
Not sure I'll ever be that close to the action again so thought I'd share.

Sitting directly behind an NBA bench is something everyone should do at least once.

That is truly a cool story bro. Thanks for sharing, I'd love to sit that close one day

Sitting on the floor is an awesome experience.
I've done it twice and it's a blast.
The last time I did was the Philly game last season. My ticket rep hooked me up with 4 right behind the scorers table. Unfortunately there was a fan the row behind us that would NOT shut the frick up the entire game. I have no problem getting loud during big moments or when we're on D, but this dude had no quit in him for a full 2.5 hours. Just yelling his fricking head off the entire time. Timeouts, between quarters, didn't matter. Being next to the scorers table, you get to hear exactly what the refs are saying when they call a foul or if they are reviewing a play etc. But with this dude behind me I couldn't hear shite. There was a situation in the game when they were reviewing for a flagrant (I think), and it was a pretty close call. I was listening intently when the refs were giving their explanation to gentry and Brett Brown but I missed the entire thing cause this dude was screaming in my ear for literally the entire review process (about 3 or 4 minutes).
Didn't have the heart to say anything to the guy because I overheard his friend telling someone else next to them that this guy was from somewhere in Europe (can't remember where) and it was his first NBA game ever.
The other time was back in the day when Green hit like 13 fgs in a row to set a new franchise record for consecutive made baskets against Vince Carter and the Suns.
Overall it's fricking awesome seeing the game from that perspective. You don't get a full appreciation for the size and speed of these guys watching it on TV.

I think i paid $250 for the two i got, first row behind the Pels bench. It was worth it.

Nice, and as others said, truly a CSB

That is an awesome recap. I sat behind the pels bench once a few years back. Ryan Anderson was getting bitched at for bad defense. I got to hear him complain to a teammate that no one was playing defense.
Every big NBA fan should behind the bench at least once. Very cool experience.

A lot of coaches do this though. It’s like a boxing trainer telling his fighter that THE OTHER GUY is tired.

my rep got us behind the pels bench last year for a game, not court side but I could reach out and high five the players. I’ll say this, it gave me a whole new appreciation for the coaches and Gentry in particular. That dude works his arse off on the sideline
Like OP says the players do like rivers, you could see Davis chatting him up often during dead balls at that end

Quality post thanks dude.

Any recs on best way to do this? Try to get them on seatgeek or is calling the ticket office better?
Posted on 10/25/18 at 7:26 pm to lionward2014
Call the ticket office. Those guys will harass you to no end though. But you have to applaud their effort. It doesn’t bother me that they call and email me all the time despite not going to games recently. I’m glad they are trying as hard as they do to put butts in the seats.
I’ve had the best luck with vivid seats for the cheapest tickets as far as online goes.

Me and TBob have sat there before. It was against the Suns so it was shitty. Booker didn't even play

What has the world come to when local media personalities start name-dropping T-Bob Hebert?
