re: Remember when Dell Demps tried to accelerate the timeline with AD...

I knew Demps was a moron the instant he tried to trade CP3 to the Lakers for a poo poo platter of overpaid journeymen from Houston.
He wasn't the centerpiece at the time but Goran Dragic is the only person from either return that went on to be an all-star or an all-NBA team. Does his career play out the same, probably not but considering Gordon didn't want to be here and Kaman/AFA were gone quickly Goran and the Houston deal might've been better.

This is the thinking that got Dell in trouble. Unless re-signing was mandatory by Benson, Gordon should've been signed and traded to Phoenix or Houston who both wanted him at the time. Pels would've gotten something for him. It would've been a tough decision but you can't evaluate re-signing a guy just bc you gave up something for him. That's already a sunk cost.
Your return for a superstar in a trade can't be an immediate sunk cost either. In retrospect the best asset on the Suns was the aforementioned Dragic and PJ Tucker, who probably would've been back overseas if his NBA ascent started here.

you are right. i read that wrong. it's 1-3 protected for 2021, and unprotected for 2022.
Regardless, you can call it a shite draft all you want. The supposed shite draft of 2013 gave us 3 guys that have made All NBA teams in Oladipo/Giannis/Gobert, as well as CJ McCollum, Steven Adams and a slew of other players that have made plenty of NBA money in the last 7 years. I guarantee there's at a minimum 1 all star that will go in the lottery of this years draft.
Beal and McCollum are not AD.

I believe back then the suns best assets were Dragic and Gortat. They also got two 1st rd picks from the Lakers for Nash, one of which turned into mikal bridges.
To be fair, no one expected the Lakers would suck like that tho so those picks weren't thought of too highly.

I’m good with Griff if he gets rid of Gentry

Monty was just bad at developing young talent back then too.
I have to completely disagree with this. Monty helped a lot of players turn the corner on their career. Unfortunately, a lot of them had to play bigger roles than they ever should have because Demps kept the Z-chart full of blanks.

who has complained about the roster construction?
This is one of the better built teams in the last 12 years in New Orleans.
Griffin's messages are just mixed. Built a playoff caliber roster, fired everyone except the underachieving coach. Doesn't really jive.
You either want to shoot for the playoffs as you build, or you want to put yourself in position to bolster the value of your acquired draft picks.
It has been a weird in between stretching all the way into today.

That criticism is valid.
I think while they "wanted" to make the playoffs, they were more focused on being competitive. They didn't want a team with a bunch of rookies and bums that wins 20 games. They didn't want to tank and have players like Zion be used to losing.
They wanted to be competitive while still knowing they need 2-3 more years to put this together to find the right mix and grow.
A lot of this season was about discovery (what kind of player is Brandon Ingram? what kind of player is Ball? Is Jrue a fit going forward?), allowing them to figure out what they need to do over the next 2-3 years, and they wanted to be competitive to better gauge it.

Hopefully Griffin learned a lesson this year. Fearless Alvin isn’t as good of a coach without Steve Nash running the team.

Very few melted more than me about hiring Gentry and then Griffin retaining him.
If Gentry is not let go after this season, then I will be upset. Very very upset.

I don't remember many people being happy about the hire. I know damn sure i wasn't.

With Atkinson on the market Griff has zero reason to stay with Gentry. If Brett Brown hits the market too it’d be even more inexcusable.
Posted on 8/10/20 at 5:33 pm to TigerinATL
If Brown and Atkinson are both available and we retain Gentry I will melt nuclear style
Posted on 8/10/20 at 5:51 pm to Fun Bunch
Besides the fans wanting Gentry gone (and fans matter for $), I think that, after the bubble collapse) we would have trouble attracting good free agents to come play for Gentry.
Because the bubble bungle was breathtakingly bad.

I didn’t really like trading the #4 pick for Hayes and NAW. They both look like nba journeymen potential at best
No, no, no. Please show me the journeymen with Jaxson's height who can run and jump like he can. NAW can to the rim every play. They both have talents that very few journeymen have. They both have elite potential.
Now, lots of guys with elite potential fail to develop it -- most of them either get injured, lack the right coaching, and/or fail to put in the work to be great. In this draft, only Zion and Ja were no-doubt great, and most drafts even lack one can't-miss player.
But you have to be patient-- Hayes and NAW are both still growing into their bodies.

If David Griffin keep Alvin one more year he will lose a lot of respect (not all, but a lot) from myself and a lot of the fanbase.
What if his guy isn’t available until the following offseason? Let Chris Finch coach for a year?

It's certainly true that Gentry was a particularly bad coach for this team. A team with a talented vocal leader would make Gentry look a lot better. Griffin's anointing of Jrue as team leader and MVP candidate was probably his biggest mistake.
Someone needed to hold players accountable, and there was neither a coach nor a star player to do it.

With the LAL picks, we also don’t know how long LeBron can play at a high level.

They have a good shot to get the #1 pick. THey have lottery picks for next year and the next from Minny. They have 3 picks right now that are infinitely better than our warchest, plus a 24 year old who scores 20 a night.
The top of this draft including the #1 pick might be the worse in the last decade. And that 24 year old is one of the worse contracts in the league. There’s a reason no one wanted him or was giving up any assets to get him.
Who knows what happens to the LAL down the road. Lebron will lose to Father Time soon enough and AD is a beta that always gets hurt. Those picks may be gold later. And the wolves pick has some protections on it.
